I am looking to get a small fish (about an inch to an inch and a half in length); that can be kept in a coldwater aquarium that would do well with only 2 or 3 others. All the options I've looked at have said they need about 6 to be happy or so.

Thanks :)

Problem is with these type of fish is that they are readily available in the wild but also so rarely found in the hobby unfortunately. If you could get a small heater it would broaden your options into the tropical stuff like Badis fish and Sparkling gourami they usually do well in trios :) A small heater is only £10 - £20 if its like a 5g or something you can get a heater made for the fluval edge which is about £20 and its really small, just a black rectangle :)

What's the size of the tank and do you have anything else in there or are planning to stock with?

It's 5 gallons. So I'd like something really small. I have some cherry shrimp in at the minute. I got them from a coldwater tank and I've been monitoting it; the temperature is between 18-20degrees daily; so something that would be suitable in those temperatures.

Yeah, for that size of tank I can't think of anything that would be okay, and the only thing I can think of would eat the shrimp.
