Hello,

I've accidentally created a big bacterial bloom in my tank - last night I saw some black algae and gave the tank a too thorough cleansing - 30 per cent water change, scrubbed fake plants, good vaccum of the gravel and replaced half of the filter media.

It looks like my cleaning frenzy inadvertently killed off too many good bacteria - The next morning the tank was milky white with a fine white fuzz covering everything (plants - real and fake, rocks, driftwood etc).

I have a 30 gallon tank with a mix of 15 neon and rummy nose tetras, four corys, 2 otos, two halfbeaks and two German Rams.

I have had the tank for about six months with no problem and usually just do a 25 per cent water change once a week, with some vaccuming.

I have done a couple of partial water changes today but it is still very murky. My nitrites and nitrates are fine - 0. Gh is 4d, kh 3d, chlorine 0, and Ph is low at 6 or so (it has always been low, with no problems so far). I live in Bangkok, Thailand, and there are no tests kits available here for ammonia, so I can't check that.

From what I can see, the fish appear to be doing fine. I have snails too and none of them headed for the water's surface (I was told they are a good early warning system) during the day.

But i am very worried about the fish in that murky water...what should I do??? Thanks for your help.

All you can do is keep doing water changes and increase aeration.
It shouldn't take long for the ammonia reading to go back to 0.

water changes very oftne if you can put an airstone in on full power. and add some sera clear water, it works very well. i had the same problem as you and when i used that it was clear within 20 min good luck
