I am in the process of doing a water change; I just took about 20% of the water out. When I went to go change the water I noticed that the water was very warm; almost like a bath tub! Is this normal? Maybe my tank comes with a built in heater? I've had this tank for less than a week! Help please?!

It shouldn't be that warm! My water is heated to 80 degrees, this feels lukewarm at best. Tropical water is never actually warm as such, it's just not cold! You need a thermometer ASAP.

I did buy one...just tried using it and it kept falling off the side! It won't stick 'cause the tank is plastic- maybe that's why?! Ugh!

if u still have the thermometer just float it in tank for 10 mins just so u know the tank temp and then go from there :)

Okay it's floating...and Loretta is wondering what kind of monster I just plopped into her tank!

OKAY the thermometer says it's about 80-81 degrees...and I am reading the right side...but this is after I made the water change; not before...I'll test it again in a couple of hours, and then tomorrow to see if there is a difference.

80 is fine so no problems there but yeh best 2 check when tanks fully heated back up u could always drop the heater slightly just incase wont do any harm as longs its not a 2 dramatic drop

There's no built in heater...what do you have the heater set on?

It could just be that you have handled colder water before putting your hands into the tank. I've had a few instances lately where the water seems really warm, when i look at the thermometer, its at normal temperatures.

Hi, little_mermaid,
just wanted to mention that if floating thermometers won't stick where you can read them, you can get a standing thermometer you can stick in the gravel wherever it's not too obtrusive in your pretty tank but can be easily seen at a glance, perhaps in a front corner and visible from the side.
You'll probably find you form a habit very quickly of checking her temps whenever you go over to her, since they're so important.
As you may or may not know, a temp. change of more than 2 degrees (this for F, anyway, which was designed in degrees perceptible to humans - and fish) can be very stressful to fish, which can develop lowered immune systems and susceptability to disease if there's too much chronic variation in temp, or too low a temp for their needs.
The smaller the quantity of water, the more fast or extreme the variations in conditions, and an even closer watch on these little tanks is essential.
And with such a devoted Loretta fan having her care, I suspect that no detail will pass ignored.

I should add that there are hanging metal thermometers and I have those in a number of my tanks, which I didn't mention because they aren't very pretty, but really, they wouldn't show much at all on the side either as they're so thin as to be barely visible from that angle, and would be more easy to read, too.
Never said I was awake...

Water should not be up around 80 unless the room is very warm..... is she by a window or something that has a lot of sunlight? Next to a tv or electronic device that puts out heat?

The light alone will not normally keep the temperature that warm unless it is in a warm area in the room.

What kind of thermometer are we talking about? one that sticks to the outside of the tank (flat) or one that suctions to the inside? If a flat one, make sure you take the backing off to expose the adhesive.

I've noticed that when water is in the 80-85 degree range, it feels substantially warmer than the standard 78 degrees. As you said, "like bath water". 80-82 degrees is an acceptable temp, but no higher unless it is under treatment circumstances.

Definitely do not get a heater until you figure out what is going on. You can relax a bit though, she is not in any immediate danger. ;)
