I recently changed my filter, and I didn't know the corys weren't good with new filters. One died already and another one looks like he has blood spots on his skin - mainly the head area. What is this? Please help!

my stats are above, it sort of looks like the picture, but the blood spots are very defined, they don't "spread out"

when you changed your filter, did you leave any source of bacteria in the filter, like I can change my carbon but leave a spounge in there for the bacteria. If you didn't, I would assume you have an ammonia spike in your tank, for which you should do partial daily water changes. I would really recomend getting an ammmonia test kit, it is one of the more important ones to know.

Does the fish look like any of these? Scroll down to see the pix, this is looking at external bacterial infections. MORE PICTURES

none of the pictures really look like it. I am doing a water change now. How long until the tank adjusts to the new filter? It's a different type of filter, so I couldn't really use any old carbon from the old one. :( Wish I knew

its not so much the carbon, but the bacteria that are important. Basically what happens in a tank is beneficial bacteria build up to break down your fish's waste. The majority of these live in the filter, which is why many filters have a spot for the bacteria specifically, like a spounge. This spounge should NEVER be replaced, only rinsed off with dechlorinated water if it gets too gunky for water to flow through. Right now, you should have some bacteria in your tank on gravel and decorations, which will help. If your filter doesn't have this, look around and try to find something you can place inside the filter for the bacteria to grow on so you can change the carbon without going through this every time.

For the time being, get an ammonia test kit tomorrow, so you can keep an eye on how bad your cycle is. Also keep up with daily water changes. If you need to do several durring the day, go for it, sine that will be les stressful than the ammonia.

I have no clue what it could be if the fish doesn't look like what is in the pix, those were my two guesses. But clean water will definately help them, so keep that up.

I put some of the gravel right in the filter. That should help?

The red spots are gone! Hope that is good. BUt he definately isn't acting normal. He is "breathing" heavily and not looking for food.
