just gone upstairs to find my otto sucking the dead body of my 'missing' tetra. and my last cory more or less dead. im not sure whats killing them all though, i think it might be some bacterial disease...?
they start of with not swimming around usually anymore then after a few days they cant swim and will sit on the bottom, then after a few more days they will start to completly loose balance and turn on one side, but try to keep swimming around at the bottom, they loose colour, then die. its not nice to see but i have lost 11 fish to it. i had 3 ottos lost, 3 honey gouramis, 3 neon tetras and 2 corys. iv have left 5 neon tetras and 2 platys. i am leaving the amount of fish in and hope that it is ok and dont lose anymore, if im planning on a new tank with new stock then i need to not buy anymore in the next few months, even if things clear up.

any suggestions welcome x thanks x

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Any signs of flicking and rubbing, excess mucas, or laboured breathing or gasping.
Are the fish acting listless and lethagic.

The third type of infection produced by Aeromonas is by no means the least. This form is often the most virulent (potent) and can be rapidly fatal. This insidious form does not produce any noticeable external ulcers. The most notable feature is a behavioral change in which the infected fish generally become listless and lethargic. Some fish may lose color or appear darker. The fish do not feed, frequently seem off balance and may sink to the bottom laying on their sides. The course of the disease is rapid, and by the time the behavioral changes are noticed, the entire population of a tank may succumb, sometimes in a day or so. This is an internal infection, with the bacteria being found in the kidneys and blood of these fish. The bacteria produce potent toxins that account for the severity of the disease.

is there not a cure for this then?

it has killed alot of my fish in a matter of about 2 months. my tank is 48ltrs and im affraid i desperatly need a new test kit as iv ran out, last time i checked everything was ok, except the ammonia was a bit high. water changed have been done everytime a fish has died and once every week atleast.

Your tank was overstocked.
Your ammonia reading is telling you that.
You need to keep doing water changes to get the ammonia reading down.
How many fish are left now?

Your stocking about right now for that tank size.
Get water tested.
Water changes and increase aeration.
Are you still using the interpet med.

to be honest im thinking of changing my stock when things settle down. i want to try and get rid of my platys, as they produce so much waste its unbelievable! and thinking of getting 3 honeys and poss another otto? so 10 fish in total.

but i wont be getting any as im going on holiday in a few weeks and also if this disease they have is very strong and is it cureable? then it may threat all my stock still.

is there anything i can do other than water changes? for about 3- 5 times a week or more? less?

thanks x

Its the bad water quality that made them ill.
I would try anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

The tanks to small for gouramis.
If you rehome the platy get another otto. Once the tanks cycled.
10 fish is to much for your tank size.

Soak there food in garlic juice to boost there immune system.

what? i have kept honey gouramis in my tank many times, and iv never been told there was a problem, and they seemed to live long and happy. iv had this tank two years and the first year or so i had some honeys in. i love there characters and their my favourite fish? ive been told many times that they are fine for a ten gallon tank?

and ok, well ill keep doing water changes to get the ammonia down, and ill look out for the med. thanks for your help x

is it a 10 gal. Thought it was under that.
Research the fish before you buy on adult size, and if there compatiable with the fish you keep.

yes mine is a 10 gal.

reserched on them and males grow max 1 1/2 inches and females grow a max of 2 inches x and they are also compatable with the fish i have as i had one that was kept with my stock before it passed away :(

Ok.
Good Luck.
