Hi,

I'm Linda,

I bought a tank yesterday, i have just been reading posts about adding amonia to cycle you tank quicker, how does this work exactly, i was told to sprinkle a couple of flakes of food in to rot down, does this do the same job or is 1 better than the other?

So far i have:

washed my gravel and ornaments well
filled it with water
added a water conditioner

the tank has been running for over 24 hours, i still have some air bubbles on the glass, but i know it will take a few days before they disapear.

any help or advice will be most welcome. :D

You can buy jeyes ammonia from boots, B & Q, hardware stores, and chemist.

helloooooooooooooooooooooooo there. welcome to the forums. what kind of fish are you looking at keeping and why do you want to do a fishless cycle?

Thanks for the welcome and the replies,

So just normal amonia is ok? how long do you leave it before adding fish?

Brewyn,

i thought you were suposed to do a fishless cycle to mature the tank, most of the websites i have visited have said to do this, but if there is another way i'd be glad to hear about it.

I want to keep Guppies and Tetras to start with.

its your own choice, I have been keeping fish for over 20 odd years and I have always started a natural cycle with just a couple of fish. I may have read it some where but what size is your tank, if its over 2ft then you can happily put 3 or 4 fish in to start with. make sure the temp is correct before you add the fish, dont over feed and do a small water change once a week.

sorry, adding fish, feeding them, fish waste, is a normal way to start the cycle on your tank, it builds up the bacteria in your filter. my wife has just set up her own 4ft tank with mixed live bearers etc, she did the same as i have suggested to you and now her tank has about 20 fish in and lots of fry, all very healthy. she does her water changes and the water paramaters are fine. no problems. I have never looked into fishless cycles as I have never seen the point of changing something that works for me. heres a photo and keep in mind its only been running a month. not the best photos in the world.

My tank is a Rekord 96 so it's a reasonable size tank.

so, once the air bubbles have gone i could add a couple of fish?

My Mum and Dad used to keep them years ago, Mum said they had no real problems adding them after a week.

sorry i should be posting on the other board, appologies.

Post in beginners you will get a lot of help and advice from members.

the cycle wont start without the fish, its the waste that starts the process. only add a few fish and maybe in a couple of weeks add a few more. :good:
