Hello,

Im Karl and new to the forum. Im 26 and been looking after fish since i was about 18 but still no expert!

Started off with a cold tank but about 4-6 years ago that was a 30L tank. I changed to keeping tropical fish and at the same time bought a Fishbox 64L tank. Last year i had to replace the Fishbox as it started leaking at the back so i went and replaced it with a Askoll Xl (94L).

My tank currently houses a mixture of fish.

1x Red Lizard Whiptail
1x Yellow Honey Gourami
3x Opaline Gourami
1x Molly
6x 5 Banded Barbs
1x Hoplo Catfish
1x Red tailshark
2x Killifish
3x Black Phantom Tetra
2x Marble Hatchet
6-10x Assassin Snails

Yes i know some quantity of the fish are incorrect but this is due to losses over the years and never restocked with the same fish as chose something different.

Some will also say the tank is over stocked but all seems fine.

Yes, as you say, there are issues with your tank stocking, but hopefully you will learn how to stock your tank from this forum ;)

Hope you enjoy the forum.

Hi Karl, welcome to the forum.

For what it's worth, my personal opinion of your stock is as follows:

1x Red Lizard Whiptail - too big for your current tank as it can get to 6 inches in size. need at least a tank double the size
1x Yellow Honey Gourami- perfectly fine size wise in your tank but I wouldn't keep one on it's own.
3x Opaline Gourami -too big for your current tank as it can get to 6 inches in size. need at least a tank double the size
1x Molly - Should be ok but prefers being in a shoal rather than just one. Might be better in a larger tank as they get fairly big although I've never kept them.
6x 5 Banded Barbs - Shoaling fish so the number is right but I'm not sure wouldn't prefer them in a larger tank
1x Hoplo Catfish -never heard of this before so won't comment.
1x Red tailshark - I'd say this is too big for your tank. needs a tank at least double the size with carefully selected tank mates.
2x Killifish- wide range of species so difficult to say but they generally like lower temperatures than many of the other fish you have
3x Black Phantom Tetra- Shoaling fish so really need more than 3. I'm also not sure wouldn't prefer them in a larger tank
2x Marble Hatchet - Shoaling fish so need more than 3. I'm also not sure wouldn't prefer them in a larger tank
6-10x Assassin Snails - Seem fine to me although never bothered with snails personally

You have a nice size tank though if you are prepared to make some concessions on the stock.

Agree with alot said above. But as said alot of group/shoal fish had right amount at said times and never replaced with them again as they died. I was getting a feel for different fish mixs.

I have a few plans in hands to be done but just time till it happens. Im awaiting for some fish to top themself (I wont be killing fish!) then once alot is lost i will then look to restock and go back to how my tropical tank started from day 1. a male and female of one species, a small shoal about 6 of mid swimmers and a few bottom feeders to mop up food.

But till i lose fish im just going to run as i am.

Red Tailed Sharks need a tank footprint of 1200x450mm, so a really decent sized tank as they are active and territorial and grow up to 7 inches (Ive heard)
