Hello!

So I got into fishkeeping by "rescuing" fish from a friend who couldn't/wouldn't care of them. So for the past 8 years I've had two Oscars and two Red Bellied Piranha. The RBPs came out of a 20g tank that a friend of mine had kept them in for 2 years. The Oscars were babies that they had also bought and they had them in a 10g tank. While I know it was much less than ideal, I took them all and put them in a 60g tall tank that I had. They survived with me through 3 moves, got along well for the most part, and we did daily water changes for the past 8 years.

Like I said, I know it wasn't even close to being ideal, but our local fish store wouldn't take them and we couldn't find anyone with a bigger tank to take them.

Big Red the oscar was the last survivor, and he passed away last week. :(

Anyway, so now I am getting ready to set my tank up with some new fish. I'm not sure what for my stocking list, but I'm looking for some easier fish (meaning hopefully only having to do water changes once a week). Suggestions on stocking would be great!

My biggest problem is that I have really hard water in my new house, with a PH of 8.9. After talking to some people, they said the only thing I should put in there is African Cichlids unless I want to constantly be adjusting the PH. Is this true?

My tank is a 60 tall (48x12x24) and we have a Rena Filstar XP3.

Thanks!

As I see it you have two main groups to choose from. Both African rift lake cichlids and common livebearers will do fine in your tap water. I would not try to mix them since Africans are, in general, a bit too aggressive for the livebearers.
