Good morning everyone!

I'm new at having my own fish so I'm happy to have found this forum. As a kid, my parents did have a 55 gallon tank but as an adult I've never had one of my own.

After losing one of my pets this past Monday a friend of mine brought me a "gift" of sorts just yesterday - a small betta.

That's what prompted me to find a fish forum, as I'm completely new at all of this.

Right now he's get up in a bowl that's approx a gallon full. I think he may need more than that so I need to figure out how to get him properly set up. Today I'll be gone from the house for a family gathering but hopefully by Thanksgiving I'll have him squared away.

:hi: jeepers you have come to the right place, we have a great area for betta lovers, jump on in :good:

Sorry for your loss

Thank you all! I havn't gotten around to doing more to his overall setup. I've been sick this week, but I am taking time to read the forum information about bettas :)

Hi there, :hi: to our forums, I joined earlier this year not knowing too much about tropical fish, I have learned loads since being here and I am still learning stuff from members here each day. Enjoy your stay with us.

Welcome to the forum Jeepers. I am in central Illinois myself.
You are somewhat correct about the possibility of needing more space for your common betta. Unless you are ready to do frequent large water changes, that is a very small container for a betta splendens. I tend to keep mine in larger tanks with other fish but would use a filtered tank of at least 3 gallons if I didn't want to do many water changes for a betta. We have a betta section here on TFF where you are likely to be told that 5 gallons is the minimum for one of those fish but I have kept 5 females at a time in a simple 10 gallon with no troubles. The care you give your fish is a big part of the equation when it comes to determining the minimum tank size needed for any fish stocking level.
