Hello fellow fish people of the world... I am Clive of Calgary Canada. I use to have a lot of tanks when I wore a younger mans clothes.
I have been out of it for many years but just jumped back in and the water is warm...

I have a 55 gallon tank. 12"-D x 48"-L x 20"-H
I have a Fluval 305 canister filter.
The tank came with a power filter that hangs off the back but is not be running it often. I will time it for 6 cycles of 10 minutes each day. I had the tank running for 2 weeks with nothing in it but water and rock...
I added 20 gold fish to it lase Saturday and lost 3 yesterday, expected...
My goal with this tank is to link it in to an aqua-phonics grow bed for lettuce, green onion and some herbs, small scale experiment.
I have a background in water analysis for heating aps and domestic water distribution.
I look forward to talking with anyone that has similar ideas...

just add iron... the Aztec did this 2,000 years ago on floating rafts in swamps...

Eventual the medium in the filter canister will be removed and the grow will be the solid filter.

Welcome to the forums. Sounds like you have an interesting idea to test. Would love to follow it. There are places to start some journals on here about your daily/weekly/monthly trials and tribulations. Once again welcome and hope you enjoy your stay.

Welcome to the Forum.
It does sound like an interesting experiment...

A few things caught my eye - -
first off all, you will not have a cycled tank or a healthy and functioning filter by only running it for an hour a day in increments. Bacteria need a constant flow of oxygenated water over them (done by running the filter) or they will quickly die off and leave your tank constantly in a fish in cycle.

also - - 20 goldfish in a 55 gallon??? this is severly overstocked. a 55 gallon is suitable for maybe 5-6 goldfish depending on species. for your stock you need over 200 gallons and more.
