Heating Problem

hi, i was a proud owner of a fluvel edge 6l as a Christmas pressie and its currently in the cycling process (fish less), it has soil, gravel and 4 plants along with the bamboo planter located at the back and has a superfish 50w heater (the fluvel 25w) wasn’t heating the water above 22c, for the last couple of days the water has been reading 16c (external thermometer) and I have put the heater up to 28c to try and increase the heat, this was a brand new heater a couple of days ago and I cant seem to work out why this heater is not being able to heat such a small about of water! The tank is located in my dining room which is generally cold. – I did think of moving my tank although this is really only the place for it and the rest of my house is generally cold too ! – not so fun in the winter!

Please may I have your thoughts and any suggestions would be welcome.

are you sure the heater is actually working? when i think i have trouble with a heater,i usually put in a basin under water and feel the heater to see if it is heating up,as sometimes the light come on to indicate that is working when it is not,i know not the safest way do do things but that is the way i do it.also get an internal thermometer

Perhaps its the thermometer thats broke and not the heaters.

hi thanks for your speedy responses, the heater has a read light on it, and i have felt the water around it and its cold like the rest of the tank, so it may not be working - although it was to begin with - could/should it break so easily?

might have just been a faulty heater

have you put any fish in the tank yet?

thank you for your response, would it be possible for anyone to surgest a good nano heater? i got the superfish one due to it just fits (17cm) however trying to look for another which has good reviews and will fit and has an adjustable temperature has been a problem, thank you again for all your help so far.

i would take the heater back to where you bought it for a repalcement as it is not working properly

Hi Scott thank you for your response, there is no fish in at moment and wont be until it has completly cycled and i am completly happy with the environment for them, i do have plants in at the moment and they seem to be ok, i was wondering whether the fluvel bamboo thing maybe affecting the distribution of the heated water as the heater is located behin this (as directed by fluvel)? is there any brand of heaters i should stay clear of? thank you again

i have no experience with the fluval edge so cannot really comment on it,but if fluval sat that is where you have to position there heater per there instructions i really don't see it being a problem.as i said earlier i would take the heater back to the place you bought it from.

hi its a 6l fluvel edge - the fluvel 25w preset heater didnt do the job as it wouldnt heat above 22c

I have a visitherm 25 watt heater in my betta's 25 litre tank. It's not very long - only about 6 inches - I had to search for a brand that would fit in the tank. I also have a sera 25 watt heater for my quarantine tank, that's about the same length. Both of these keep the water at 25 deg in my kitchen.
