Hi all

Does it matter whether a heater is placed vertically or horizontally in the tank?

Just wondered whether, if placed along the bottom, the thermostat would kick in earlier due to warm water rising?

Cheers

Andy

Always used to place them either vertical or diagonally, though since having a BN plec and senegal bichir and after hearing many horror stories involving these fish I have been placing them vertically

agreed Although my CAE still likes to warm his belly up on it

I would move your heater to vertical asap as fish can die from laying on the heater.

I would do, but he's been doing for so long now that I don't think he's stupid enough to sit on top of the heating element. I have my 75W covered and my 50W uncovered. But I've watched him and he's smart enough to realise that my BN is spikey when p*ssed off, so I'm pretty sure he's smart enough to realise the one end of the heater gets too hot for fishes to be laying on.

But if I have any problems, then I'll obviously rectify the situation.

well don't recitify it by putting it vertically as that isn't efficient heater wise imo. Just get a heater guard and leave it at a 45 angle.

fish are not that stupid i would say 45 degree angel about half way up the tank side or back the only reason
you need heater shields is for big fish that throw thing about like rocks and bog wood and heaters and filters
or smash the heater against the tank side

good luck biff

 The evidence of this is.....?

Try telling that to the various people that have had fish such as bichirs, plecs and stingrays die from laying on heaters.

I put mine at 45* angles, nearer the bottom of the tank. Keeps from having to move it when you do water changes.

I had my heaters at a 45 degree angle, then when I feared my fish may injure themselves or break the heaters I moved them to a verticle position inside the overflow.

Yeah, i've got to say 45* is pretty efficient, it's what I use in most tanks apart from my planted nano where the wood in the tank means I have to keep it vertical.

Mine is at 45ish but i see don't how a fish resting on a heater could kill it. Could someone explain this to me?
