Iv got to tanks 50litre and a 130litre. Just trying to work out how much there are costing me to run.

Its the heaters am thinking about more than the filters one is 150watts and the other is 50watts?

Good good just asking as the missus seems to think it will be a lot as its 32p to make a 4 cups of tea.

Aye,the cost of running a tank of smaller size is very small,I have a 44 gallon and a 70 gallon both running heaters, and my entire electric bill is almost always just over $40 per month. Now,I do have a small house and me and the wife are very good about shutting things off all the time, but the tanks o run 24 hours a day....Only thing to consider is if your using the right equipment for the job, because ofcorse if your running a 75 watt heater in a 70 gallon tank it's going to be running all the time and will cost you alot more than if you used the correctly rated heater.

How do you work that out? If you have a high powered heater and low powered heater heating the same amount of water under the same conditions they will both consume exactly the same amount of energy and hence cost the same. Obviously the lower powered heater will be on longer but this is proportional to the consumption of energy.

You will also knacker the lower rated heater a lot quicker ;)

That's why I use over-rated heaters (both my 20g and 22g have 200w heaters). Not that it would make much difference in my case anyway as they are both digitally controlled:

This is the controller for the 22g

Anyhoo,

We pay £21 p/m for electric. That's includes 8 tanks all running filters and heaters (we have 5 more being set up after Christmas when I get around to building a cabinet for them).

A larger heater will keep the tank at a more even temperature as it will not switching and and off as much due to the latent heat the heater will have once it has reached its setpoint.
