Well here we go again, I somehow managed to forget to turn my heater of on a midnight water change in my fry tank (I blame tiredness). The heater was on a temperature of 24 degrees. I noticed after a couple of minutes due to a 'burny' smell and after turning the heater off I could hear it sizzling, it is completely exposed to the air. I can see no signs of damage and could do with a quick answer on wether or not I am safe to turn it on, this heater is in fact my spare. The fry would maybe survive room temp overnight but I really don't want to risk it, still, it's probably a better risk than electrifying the water.

I did this the other day! I only noticed when the rubber suction thingy melted and stank. I immediately switched it off and left it in a bucket of water, then picked off the burnt-on bits of rubber - it's been fine since. Though I had coincidentally already ordered a Hydor external, so as soon as that arrives I'll remove the older one.

Thanks, mine didn't actually go to that extreme so I think I will wait for it to cool down, try it and hope for the best. Wish me luck.

Edit: Out of curiosity what kind of male to female ratio are your killifish in and how does it work for you?

No idea I'm afraid! I'm ashamed to admit they were an impulse buy at the weekend. They're tiny at the moment, maybe 2cm long and about 1mm wide, and I've only managed to identify one clear male (I think!). I do really like them though, and once I get a bigger tank, I'm thinking of keeping the 60l as a killifish tank, adding about 12 lampeyes.
