He Nearly Choked To Death On Bloodworm!

I have only give alphie bloodworm on one occasion and the last time he had it he didnt seem to be 'mad' over it, so this time i tryed it again i dangled it he jumped for it and ate it, then the second one he got it ate it but then it came half out his mouth and he'd try eat it but couldnt get it down he did this for 5 minutes then he went pale and i had to get him out and get it before he choked on it! So i tried to get him with the net and that wouldnt work so i went with the only thing i could and tried to get him with my hand, he got to the top of the tank with my hand near him then he finally spat it out!
i wont be feeding him that again lol! It wasnt even a long worm!

I'm not entirely sure fish (even bettas) can choke...

I very much doubt that the bloodworm could have been restricting water flow around the gills. Or have filled the fishes mouth so much that he wouldn't have been able to get air...

My theory would be that he bit off more than he could chew, got stressed cause he couldn't eat the worm in one go, then eventually after being chased around for a bit decided he didn't want to eat anymore.

Lol, don't get me wrong, I've glad he's ok! And I'm sure it was really worrying watch him loose colour. But I've seen bettas loose colour for all sorts of silly things, they really know how to sulk! Hehe.

fish CAN choke! ive read bout it, nd yesterday, my idiotic (nd fav!) fish the red oscar decided that all 3 yes 3 cubes of food were his! he lay almost on his side for a good few minutes breathing heavily, i thought he was gonna die but he eventually downed all 3 cubes!!!

LOLS, I've seen Bettas eat something, and then, a few minutes later, they'll start flapping their gills and opening their mouths all desperately, and then they'll *FINALLY* spit out a little tiny piece of food and I'm like, "You stupid fish, how do you choke on that?!" Affectionately, of course.
