I was feeding Rufus today and i have to pull the perspex cover away to do this

I fed him a pellet and turned to feed Levi his. I heard a splash and couldn't see Rufus in the tank anymore! I couldn't see him on the floor either and didn't dare move in case I trod on him. Then I saw him, underneath a chair, so I scooped him up in the net and returned him.
He really scared me, silly fish! His fins were clamped for a few minutes afterwards, although he did finish his dinner  He seems fine now, thank goodness. So, anyone with no lid on their betta tank, be warned!

wow! well done on your quick reactions and hearing the splash in the first place! Glad he is ok ellena! Typical boy though, yeah I jumped but FOOD!

I have a 2 and a half to 3 inch gap to the top of my tank and wonder if he could really clear it..

I love the improvised clear perspex invention btw, it looks really effective

i had the same thing happen to a orfe thuresday my grandads freind has a bigger pond so i put it in a bag and had it slightly open in my grandads garage for about 20 while we had dinner. then when i can back out to the garage it wasnt in its bag it wasnt on the floor i finally found it behind a tin of paint covered in dust cobweds and had loads of scales missing when i put it in the water it just flaoted upside down i whiped all the stuff of and turned it over but it kept going back upside down. so i help it in the water the right way up for a couple of mins we took it to my grandads pond put it in and it swam off fine ands still doing fine.

Lucky you sorted the fish out then bet fish feel really releived to be put back in the water after kind of nearly dying, my betta did this today i was dangling a worm and he jumped for it and got it i was so pleased!
Well mine didnt jump out of the tank though, i dont think he ever would only for food!
But omg i would of been really scared not knowing where he was, my friend once chucked her fish out the window with some water by accident and her dad found it and ran upstairs trying to get it to some water lol!
I also have about an inch from the water surface to out of the tank x

Is that picture what the tank looked like when he jumped ie. the water level? Didn't know they could jump that far. I've actually been trying to train mine to jump. Maybe I'll stop...

No, the water is currently right to the top. I think he'd still have cleared that though!

No, I don't think 2inches from the top is "safe" without. A cover. I once had Azumo in one of these pet store cups whille doing a water change. I had scooped him out too late, so the water he was in looked dirty. I wanted to drain off as much of it as possible before putting him back in the bowl, so I tilted the pet store cup and slowly drained water into a strofoam cup. I had the styro foam cup in my left and the clear plastic cup in my right (holding it slanted). Just as I decided that this was about as low as I dared to go, when Azumo suddenly leaped out! Luckily he leaped right into the styrofoam cup that now had 3/4 of the water. LOL - so much for me poutting back only little of the "dirty water". He startled me so much I put him right back into the main bowl and put the lid on. But so far he's never tried to leap out of the big bowl...

oh no i hope he is okay! By the way do you have a picture of Azumo.....he's quite the character I say....

My last betta, jumped right after i had switched the lights off and I heard this splash sound.....SO confused, switched the lights on....found nothing in the bowl    Looked down and there he was....i didn't have a net, so I had to scoop him up with my books and then once I put him in....I swear to god he was vertical for atleast an hour :(

But he survived it :).....

Since bettas can breath out of water, they can live outside of water till they dry up so they can live quite a while ie 20 minutes at least out of water.

i found 2 fluffy betta imbellis on the floor one morning not long after i got them - i scooped them up and gently cleaned them in the water with frogbit roots and they are still alive today - so even if all looks bad still put them in the tank - i think they were out for a lot longer than 20 mins as they were quite dry

I put them in breeding nets so they could lay around without getting munched and nipped by anyone else and added myxazin to the tank

Thanks jasmine! Wow, pipoodle, quite a story. Well, I'll take your word for it and will try not to give Zumi a chance to"prove it to me". ; )
