the fish I rescued from being frozen died this morning. Yesterday when I went to feed him I noticed he had lost his coloration so that evening I put him in a glass on my fridge. this morning he was on his side dead.

His scales are slightly pineconed not alot but htey werent at all last night, The only things with him last night were the loss or color and lack of being active.

He couldnt have been that old either his tail was less then an inch long. Now I am concerned that I am going to lose all my fish :-( here is his alive pic ! what did he have was it dropsy? the water was tested that day and the only thing wrong with his water was .5 ammonia (5 gall tank)

Just curious, why did you put him in a glass in your fridge?
As for the ammonia, any ammonia level can be a potential cause of death.

not in, on, and probably to raise the temperature. even so, why did you put him in a glass?

sounds like it was something internal, like a bacteria or parasite. They can take fish without you ever even knowing the fish was sick and are often the cause of dropsy symptoms.

sorry about your fish. I know sometimes if you move them it stresses them even more as said he prob. had internal illness.

I put him in a glass on my fridge because I was told to by a breeder, and I firgured if he was sick the less amount of swimming the better. The glass was put on My fridge to warm up the water alittle. Now I am scared my pleco (dwarf) is going to die too cause he was in that tank and I dont want to move the pleco to a tank with other fish as I am scared that he will have whatever my other fish had too and I dont want to cross contaminate

Big Als said that it was probably the ammonia that killed him. But I had treated the tank for high ammonia with an ammonia clear tab. Didnt test the water afterwards though.

So this is 2 tanks out of comision untill further notice ahhhhhhhh if something goes wrong with my last tabk I am lost the fish will die cause I am out of hospital tanks at this point. hmmmm

Plecos are very hardy fish, mine was the only one that survived an outbreak of ich, i wouldnt worry about him unless he behaves funny.

i don't know what to tell you. this is why it is always best to have a quarantine tank to prevent the [possible] spread of disease.

You shouldn't have put him in a glass, when stressed fish produce even more amonia than usual and the glass would get toxic quick. It probably isn't what killed him since he was ailing to begin with, but I doubt it helped.

Also the best cure for high ammonia is large water changes. Those ammonia tabs introduce yet another chemical into the tank and may do nothing other than upset the water balance.
