Aloha,

I live in Hawaii and we cannot import Nerite snails. However, we have several native species. The one I see at the beach all the time is the pipipi. See http://archives.starbulletin.com/content/20090810_ocean_watch.

Now, I want to try to introduce some into my freshwater tank. So my question are:

What precautions can I take to make sure I don’t introduce a pathogen with them?

Any other considerations?

Thank you!

If they are at the beach, they will not survive in freshwater.

If you have freshwater creeks or streams, they might contain snails but introducing wild caught snails into a tank can introduce diseases so it's not recommended. If you find some freshwater snails, you can keep them in a pond/ tank without fish and let them breed, then move the young into the tank.
