My moronic brother-in-law won 3 "gold fish" for his kids at the fare ground last week and went out and bought a goldfish starter bowl kit (this one - http://www.petsathome.com/shop/gold-filtration-starter-kit-by-interpet-83007?cm_re=barilliance-_-cross%20sell-_-product%20details?cm_re=barilliance-_-up%20sell-_-product%20details?cm_re=barilliance-_-up%20sell-_-product%20details

Anyway to cut a long story short he knows i've had a new 10 gallon set up and basically called me yesterday and said did i want them because his filters not good enough and if i don't take them he's going to flush them.

I know a 10 gallon isn't big enough but is it crueler for me to take them and keep them in a safe 10 gallon or let him flush them (I'm strongly against that)

Please help :(

Bad day to be a fish. 10 gallon is not big enough at all. Might be for a very short amount of time but once they get bigger than 3" it's just too little of space.

i'm thinking maybe i could take them on then see if i can find someone with a more suitable tank setup to take them from me?

I actually planned to have my tank at a planted betta tank haha

You can't save every fish in the world.  If you wanted a betta then get a betta.  He accepted the fish, it's his responsibility to care for them or rehome them properly.  Tell him to take them to his nearest LFS or find somebody with a pond would be the best thing for them.

If you really think he will flush them, then put them in your ten gallon and find a home for them yourself?

I'm with Daize on this one and think he should find someone with a pond. He's using emotional blackmail to get you to get him out of a tight spot. I'd say you get what you want and don't feel you have to bail him out. He got himself into the situation - let him find the solution .

I would personally take the goldfish and place them in the 10 gallon. Subsequent to this, I'd do continuous big water changes (60-80%) quite frequently to keep ammonia levels down until I could source somebody who would want to take them for free.

A local fish store may take them providing they haven't been subjected to ammonia poisoning.

You could run out and grab yourself a 3 or 4 foot kiddie pool as long as you're not somewhere miserably hot or miserable cold to house them until you find someone with a pond! I had some beautiful bigger goldfish and some tadpoles dumped at my store, and that's the route I went. Tossed a terrarium filter I had laying around in there for them and put them in the shade, so that I could take my time finding them the right home without too much stress. It's worked out quite well for me so far, they've been growing and enjoying life! :p

That wouldn't work in my area... The local bird population would enjoy it though.

Ah. I live near downtown and there's really nothing more than sparrows and robins, so they're not under any threat :p

id would take them..but i have a soft spot for silly goldfish.
