Hello everybody,

I finally cleaned up my tank from my Thanksgiving vacation. Mostly brown algae, so I'm not too stressed. I'm running out of the stuff that came with my Nutrafin CO2 system. I had intially bought like a 6 month supply (me being anal since I never did CO2 before). I want to keep using the canister and the bubble counter, but really don't want to buy more of the "Activator" and "Stabilizer" since I know it's really just yeast and some sort of bicarbonate product. Smells like the yeast and baking soda or baking powder I use when I'm baking.

I know some of you do your own mixture. What do you put in those? What's your special mix? Also, the directions in the Nutrafin say to replace every 28 days or so. I'm doing it every three weeks, can you change the mix more often?

Thanks a bunch in advance. I know people ask this question a million times, so I appreciate it that you're taking the time to read.

:D :D :D

Have an awesome day!

I use 250mL of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of yeast with no baking soda and 1.2 L of water. If your KH is >80-90ppm then you don’t need baking soda. If you make the mixture and shake it, then leave it for 48 hrs before putting the cap on , it will produce co2 longer. While the yeast have access to more oxygen, before you cap it, the yeast become more tolerant of their own waste by products that are in high concentrations later on, when the mixture is two weeks old (or older). I have had my home made mixture last 4-5 weeks , with strong co2 production the entire time.
