Have I Made A Mistake In Buying Kribs?

I did an impulse buy today and brought a pair of kribs.

Would these be suitable for my community setup? See what I have in my signature?

I was told that they are peaceful fish.

Kribs aren't a good idea with corys, as they will nip them and have been known to go for their eyes. They are also likely to go for the gouramis. I've read that kribs are aggressive towards other dwarf cichlids, although, I've never kept them with other dwarf cichlids, so I can't confirm that.

I would remove them. Wouldn't keep them in a community.

I've never heard them being bad with cory's before , mines just annoys my ram sometimes, other than that she's fine/

Mine are fine with my Corys.

If you were to remove the kribs, I'm sure the corys would appear much more lively. When I made the mistake of putting kribs with corys I didn't notice anything until I removed the kribs, and suddenly the corys were really active and happy.

Three weeks ago added a pair of common kribensis to my 40 gallon tank. They're in there with tiger barbs, black ruby barbs, 2 redtail sharks, a pleco, an Odessa barb, and a clown loach. All is well. Fish store said they'd be ok with these other characters.

Did the LFS also say it was ok to put two red tail sharks together? What about the single clown loache? They need to be in groups of 6 minimum.

Please do not believe everything or a quarter of what most of the fish shops say. They're there to make a sale and really don't care for the welfare of your fish after you have paid them your hard earned cash. Three weeks is also no time to judge how your fish will be in the long run.


It seems there's mixed reviews about this. As I said earlier in a post, I wouldn't put them together. Kribs as I'm sure your aware are cichlids. I know some people do mix cichlids but I would suggest you wouldn't. Even the 'calmer' ones can and will be aggressive at some stage.

Although right in saying this, if your not a knowledgable fish keeper (not suggesting fairghum isn't, just presuming with the relatively new account) you could never know what was right/wrong/correct/incorrect advice. The best thing to do, which I advice to any fishkeeper, is to research a species before buying. Even if it means an initial trip to the LFS to list a number of fish that take your fancy and then returning home to research them via the internet or books to see whether they would be suitable.

The first thing I did before I started to keep fish was buy a book by Jeremy G@y, and now i'm very glad I did.

But yeah, 2 RTBS is a no-no the weaker of the two will be harrased and probably eventually killed by exhaustion and Micko is also correct about the Clown Loach, a shoaling fish which needs to be in 6+, not to mention the fact they grow up to a foot long.
