A friend of mine has offered me her sons clearseal tank. Approx measurements 49"L x 18"H x 12" Wide. The 1st problem is that it is in a metal frame, like a tall coffee table but the tank is in the lower half. I will have to see if I can extract it from this frame so I can put it onto it's new base. The main problem after this is the two inhabitants. One approx 20" Plec and a Convict called Psycho (sums it up really). I really don't know how these two fish have survived. Because I'm needing a larger tank so I can move my Bala sharks to this for the time being rather than re-home them, I'm worried about the convict in with my normally peacefull tank. There will also be 2 x Adult Moonlight Gourami, 1 x Male Opaline Gourami and 3 ottos. I was thinking if the fish are still alive, can I move the 9 x threadfin rainbow's and Inky (the betta) into the larger tank and put the convict into the 60 litre just with Apple snails. Or am I just looking at trouble getting this tank in the first place. Thanks for your input guy's.

I've googled both the Plec and the Convict. I think that the Convict will be OK in the 60 litre on his own. But the plec is really too big for the tank he is in. She did say that there used to be two in there?? One died. There is currently no filtration and they have let the water level drop to just below half way. So it will take a mamouth clean, as I said before I just don't know how these fish are surviving.

Why not see if you can get new homes for the con and pleco, or at least the pleco, then I'd say take the tank.

I forgot to mention that the tank is free, it's just this metal frame around it that could cause a problem. I couldn't tell if it was welded or not.

do you have a pic? It sounds like it could just be a two tier stand and they have the tank on the bottom shelf?

Is it something like this?

Yes, something like that, she has covers on the top which she uses for ornaments etc. When they have moved it before, they moved it still inside the frame. I'm worried that I may cause damage or stress to the tank if I try and take it out, what do you think?

So long as you empty the tank before moving it then that shouldn't be a problem. Put it this way, they got it in there...

Oh and as for the current inhabitants being a problem, phone your local fish shops and advertise on here.

If they're free then I'm sure you'll be able to re-home them within a day or two of getting the tank home.

I'm guessing when they moved it they didn't completely empty it of water, Those metal frames are built by Clearseal and are designed to hold two equal sized heavy fish tank, therefore if they are only moving it across the room then they had no need to empty everything and move them separately.

Trust me if it is a clearseal tank and a cleaseal stand then you will easily be able to remove the tank from the bottom and place it to the top, its not like its going to be bolted down or anything like that, it will just be sitting on a ledge

With regards to the fish I took on a tank that had no filtration (both the undergravel filter and external were completely blocked and only just running) or heating (owners just left it) which had 2 plecs and a kissing gourami in. Be very careful if you are considering adding the fish to your current tank, the ones I had were riddled with worms and fairly sick. Personally I would quaranteen them first and treat them for worms as a precaution as they could look ok but be harbouring something that could be passed on to your fish.

Thanks all for the advice. Great news about the frame, the Tank will be sitting on a new base, I will use the metal frame for the shed, very usefull. OK, so when the new tank arrives, I have a large plastic container, which I can place the plec and the convict in, till I can rehome. When I googled about the Convict it did say they are tolorent of most water conditions, which is probably why it's survived. I think the pump/filter in the tank has stopped working because of lack of maintenance. My hubby and I are decorating the living room at the mo and hope to have this and the new tank installed before xmas. Phew.

Where abouts are you? if its any help I could possibly take the convict for you, cant help with the plec sadly I already have 5.

I'm based in Warwickshire (B49) so if there is anyone who can help with the plec also in the future, just let me know :good:

I'm tempted to collect the fish, prior to having the tank, to see how healthy they are, I wouldn't want to let some-one have a potential problem arrive. Would a heater and small filter with water changes be OK in a plastic container.

Shame its just a bit far, I have no transport at the moment, I am in B36. I have my quaranteen tank available so I could have taken the convict whatever condition.

Is that Solihull area? I could bring it over, it's our side of Birmingham isn't it?
