I know these kind of thread always come up so apologies for yet another one. 
Anyway we have a 4ft bow fronted tank. About 2ft deep and 2ft wide at the widest part (going to just over a foot at the sides). Filtration will be via a trickle tower going into a sump with bioballs.
I haven't had a FW tank for almost 4 years now and my last one was a high tech planted setup. I really liked that but was a lot of work to keep maintained and the ongoing costs of high powered lighting, ferts, etc isnt much of an option now (we are also running two marine tanks so are already running enough lights to light a football pitch ).
We have been thinking of discus (I enjoy breeding fish and discus at least are ones that have a market so not going to be left with lots of babies to constantly find homes for). Was also thinking of going for a low tech planted tank but still not sure. The other thing I have always wanted to do was to get a huge group of something like cardinal tetras. I have always kept these in groups of 10 or 20 but think a group of say 100 would look amazing.
Basically looking for something not overly complicated (discus are ok, i have an RO unit already and dealing with the water hardness is not difficult after running marine tanks), not to much initial costs and is slightly unusual or interesting.
