Has the driftwood messed up my tank?

Hi all,

I had a10 gallon that has been cycling for a bit. I added sand from one of my established tanks to it to help it through the process. I did the readings with a liquid test kit and the readings came out as if the tank is officially cycled! So I was ready to add some fish today when I noticed that fuzzy white fungus starting to appear on my driftwood. I've read on other forums that some people say the white fungus appearing is normal for uncycled tanks. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Nothing to worry about.
I think it looks so gross through so i actually use a little toothbrush and i scrub it off lol

I think it looks gross as well, but i've read it goes away on its own (and I plan to add cherry shrimp later on which I heard will snack on it), but wanted to make sure that it didn't mean my tank was actually still cycling

I agree with above. It happens to others too and will clear up. :)

If it's bothering you take out the piece & give a scrub right a toothbrush. Otherwise ignore as best you can & it'll go away. No harm to your fish.

I also agree with the above. If it’s bothering you that much, remove it.

I was searching driftwood posts the other day on this forum, and I wanted to share these two with you. While not necessarily directly related to white fungus stuff, I found them to be interesting and informative, and found especially @Byron's commentary on the topic informative in both posts.

I think the white stuff you are talking about is bacteria that is present in the wood and when you submerge it the bacteria start dying off hence the white that covers it. It’s only a temporary thing and a lot of fish love to eat it it’s totally harmless to fish I’ve had it happen in every piece of wood I’ve added and my Otocinclus love the stuff.

Some types of wood have a fungus which grows from within the wood and can be toxic to fish.

thanks for the share! I actually added a couple fish in last night and checked on them this morning, they're just flying around without a care in the world. The lack of haziness in the water makes me feel comfortable as well but i'll just monitor it closely over the next few days. If it'll go away on its own I dont plan on touching it then
