Hi everyone. I am currently in the planning stage of setting up a discus tank. The problem is that I have very hard water. I was thinking of moving some fish from my current tanks into the larger tank once it is set up but obviously I will be using treated water for the discus. Can a fish that has been acclimated to hard water move to a tank that has soft water? (I don't have any fish who are going to outgrow their current homes so moving them is not absolutely necessary)

If you take things slowly enough, several days are indicated, fish that can thrive in a given mineral content can be returned to that mineral content regime. The way to do it would be to return them to the tank and then do water changes over several days to bring the tank water to the final concentrations that you need. Since many discus are bred in relatively hard water these days, is there any reason you are choosing to reduce their mineral content?

The guy at the LFS said they use bottled water in their discus tank. If I can get some that are bred in hard water that will be better for everyone.
