Hard/soft Water Areas

Of course it matters to some extent.

But as pointed out, some of the fish that didn't make it are fish that prefer the harder water.

Where I have bought a good deal of my fish in the first 8 years of fish keeping, a lot of their tanks say 'Euro Bred' on them, not sure if that has anything to do with it but I don't see what more I could have done than my regular water changes, water testing etc. I haven't lost many fish for years, I've changed my stock a lot but I went to Wholesale Tropicals in Bethnal Green last month, I only bought an elephant nose, male fighter (kept in separate tank) and a spikey snail and all 3 had died within 3 weeks.

The fish I most expected to be sensitive were my L Number plecs and they have been the most hardy.

I am always reading on here about Rams and Neons/Cardinals dying very quickly.

agree with the eurobred fish, i was reading an article about eurobred discus (germany), they where saying how hardy they are and were kept successfuly in med/hard water. Breeding was unsuccessful.

I'm not trying to be difficult, I want to learn

So if water hardness, pH, husbandry, tank mates, temperature, feeding are not to blame, it must be the quality of the stock? What else could it be? Why I can't keep any gouramis, but very successfully kept about 100 betta splendens, why I can't keep angels or rams, but successfully kept several other type of cichlid, why I can't keep regular neons but very successfully kept a shoal of black neons for ages now... ??

I grew up in Essex and kept a tank there in the 5years before I moved. I have kept guppies and gouramis with no troubles at all - I even did water changes without dechlorinater before realising I needed to use it.

Where do you buy your fish? Sounds like you have had some bad luck.

I've bought my fish from Amwell Aquatics and Wildwoods and other shops in Crews Hill for the most part, although I do travel around to Bishops Stortford, Basildon, Colchester, Braintree, South Woodford, Bethnal Green etc. so travelling up to 50 miles sometimes

I lived near South Woodham Ferrers in one of the little villages. I doubt you would know it! It is my parents house and I moved out last year, I live in Norwich now though am still an Essex girl at heart .

I went to Swallows Aquatics in Rayleigh and they were very good. Before that I went to PetSmart (Pets@Home before it changed) and a shop in Maldon that has now closed - neither of which were very good. Can't say I know any of the stores in the places you mentioned.
