Halo's First Fishless Cycle Log

If you are getting different readings now, then the the cycle hasnt stalled, i mean its hardly even begun :) ...if it were me, i would just carry on as you are and save yourself the extra hastle :)

Ill leave it for today, see how it goes on. If i dont see changes in tommorrows test then i guess a water change is needed.

Day 4

Afternooon 5pm)

Ammonia: Looks like its at 2ppm (im not putting the vial flat against the paper, its elevated a little)
Nitrite:0.50ppm!

Im going to let ammonia fall to 0.5ppm or 1ppm then i will add more in

Heres a pic

Day 4

(nearly midnight)

50% water change was done

ammonia:2ppm
nitrite:about 0.15 ppm (not 0 ppm but still not the purple tinmge of .25ppm
Nitrate:About 10 to 20ppm

Added 5ml of stress zyme

Day 5 (its looking good!)

(Morning)

Ammonia:1ppm
nitrite: o.50ppm (its gone a light purple, its working!)

redosed ammonia back to 4ppm

Do you think the stress zyme i added helped?

Day 7

Ammonia:2ppm
Nitrite:5ppm (very dark purple)
nitrate:10ppm

How do i know when nitrite is off the scale and how fast is the drop,is it overnight ?

All I know is that when your cycle is complete you will be able to put 4-5ppm ammonia in before bed, come back in the morning (8hrs), and have it at 0 again. At that point you want to add fish to keep the bacteria from dying. :)

Wish I had thought of doing a log. Haha.

Thank god the fourm is back working. I have lost count of the last few days but logs are recorded in a notebook

Day 9

Ammonia:0.50ppm
Nitrite:eek:ff the scale
Nitrate:10ppm

Redosed to 4ppm ammonia

day 10(today):

Ammonia:0ppm (whoo!!)
Nitrite:eek:ff the scale
Nitrate:10 ppm i think

Wow, 4 to o in a day. Now you are just waiting for the no2 to go down. :)

I would like to see your tank once you have fish in it.

Thanks!, I'm considering to put shrimps in the tank for the time being. I have been told I should not add any more ammonia but currently I add 2ppm when ever ammonia falls to 0. Is this ok??

Well you would need some ammonia to keep the bacteria alive until you get fish.
But you really shouldnt add anything to a tank with 2ppm of ammonia already in it.
my understanding is that shrimps are sensitive too.

Day 13 i think

Nitrites: 2 or 5ppm .

Added some ferts today

Small outbreak of hair algae

Day 15 i think

Did a test for nitrites

Nitrites:0.25ppm !!!

Now what shall i do?, i know that this thread has sort of died but i could do with some advise now

Thanks

This would all be much easier if the readings were in the same post :)

Reading back along the thread it looks like you're in stage 2 having had the Nitrite spike and you're now adding 2ppm ammonia when ever all the ammonia is used up - is this right?

If so how's that going?

What is the advice you need? Certainly it is too early to add shrimps (they can be sensitive to poor water quality and would not appreciate you adding 2 or later 4ppm ammonia to their world!).

Regards

Miles

I'm pretty sure he was just waiting for NO2 to be converted to NO3 and adding small amounts of NH3 to keep the bacteria colony from dying before he gets fish or what be it.

Also, can you check out my log too? I want to make sure it's okay. :/
