I was offered a Haiti Cichlid (Nadopsis hatiensis) earlier this week. I was very tempted to take it on the spot as it's an attractive fish, but just about had enough common sense to decline, as I knew nothing about the fish. Having googled them, it seems they're incredibly aggressive. Has anyone any experience with these guys?

They are gorgeous fish but they can be pretty aggressive best kept as a wet pet really what tank were you thinking of putting them in?

Initially I planned on housing it with my texas and convicts...ruled that out pretty swiftly after reading how aggressive they are. I'm toying with the idea of setting up my 4x2 for it, but I'm not sure if that'll be big enough for life...might have to upgrade to a larger tank at some point.

Is it a 4x2x2? If so thats not a bad shout at least for quite some time especially if they are going to be a wet pet

Some kind of large characin may work as a tank mate silver dollars might work but I would go for spotted ones rather than just the plain ones. I think a member that used to post on here called Minnnt had one for a while might be worth searching through his threads to see how he kept them?

Ok, thanks. I'd pretty much given up the idea of keeping it with any other fish as much of the info I'd googled suggested they're simply too aggressive for tank mates.

Will look out for Minnnt's posts.

I think he only had young ones but Im sure he had them with other fish. They are one of those fish where not many people have kept them but some that do make good journals which can be found around a few forums.

They're also known as Black Nasty for a reason. Some fish are just BIG- Some fish are just really aggressive. Very few have both qualities in spades like the Odo. They are built to destroy other fish. I have heard of full grown Red Devils, Oscars and Jaguars being killed by juveniles half their size. Haven't seen any bigger than 20 inches but 24 is a safe bet for max size (in a 600 gallon). I have heard of clown loaches and plecos kept with them. I want one sooo bad, the fish store down the street has them. I guess they're susceptible to bloat and some of the captive bred have gill deformities- that's all I could find as I just recently did research of my own hope it was helpful

Ok, thanks for the info gents. I think I'm probably going to park this idea for now, as they don't seem to play very well with tank mates.
