over the last week or so hair algea is appearing all over my tank walls, plants and filter, when I rub it some of it comes off, but not all of it, so what would be the best method of removing it, atm I have change my lighting to turn off for 2 and a half hours in the middle of the day but I dont thinks thats really gonna do much, so any advice would be useful.

I'm having this same problem. I have three ottos that do a fabulous job of keeping the green/brown algea at bay, but they don't touch this stuff. It really looks gross and I have to clean it weekly. Anybody have any suggestions?

Sorry missed this, got any better pic's or has it worsened? Doesn't look like hair algae.

thanks for reply and It has worsened, I'll put new pics up tomorrow but I only have a camera phone, and the light is out now and fishies are resting, 2 days ago I got some aqua carbon which says it helps get rid of algea our stops it growing, so am now dosing liquid co2 to the tank. also my crypt never actually melted :), but where on it do I cut the leaves off on it as it is the worse affected and what ever it is, it does not come off when I rub it, and if i cant find a solution to it do I just cut with scissors as close to the bottom as possible? thanks

This type of algae is caused by low CO2 or low nutrients, are you dosing anything?

If dosing aqua carbon then I'd say your plants have used up all the nutrients, when dosing carbon or CO2 you need to be dosing ferts with N&P, aqua essentials do nourish and nourish+ the + contains N&P(macro) and the nourish contains all the micro elements, start dosing these to get your nutrients back up. :)

I dont have enough money to buy them both could I just get one and my nitrates are 20ppm and arent nitrates nutrients? so why arent they using them? and what has the start of dosing co2 done to the tank to cause the algea? and could you link the one I should use if I can just use one please, and will doseing it make the algea go away?

Well if your using carbon you need both, 20ppm is fine but that's gonna drop as the plants use it as your forcing them to photo synthesize faster by using carbon, could just spot dose the carbon to the algae and stop using it if your lighting is low enough and just use the standard nourish.

by spot dose do you mean spray the carbon on the infected leaves? and my lighting is on 8 hours a day and its a sun glo bulb, and if am using the carbon should I just get the normal nourish and use both of them together? our just the normal nourish by itself?

Once spot dosed (spraying affected area) just use standard nourish, no carbon. :)

wish I knew that before as I bought the carbon because I thought co2 would be good for the plants and it said it would help get rid of hair algea which is what I thought it was when I first saw it, its not gonna be atleast 2 weeks before I can get the nourish so should I just keep spot dosing the affected areas until then? thanks
