Just wandered if the leads are seprate so i can place one bulb at the front and the other at the back of my hood giving me lighting all around or do both bulbs have to be right next to eachother ?

was thinking of getting the 40watt starter and then getting two 30inch 25watt bulbs and then using my current 18watt in the middle giving me a total of 2.6wpg for my tank :)

Yes they are completely separate, you could probably run a bulb on two separate tanks if you needed to they are that separate :) BTW is it such a good idea to run 25w tubes in a 40w starter? Would think it'd be a fire hazard?

Yeah, rather than risk a fire, why not just do the 2x40W (without the extra 18W)? That would give you a nice 3wpg. I'm not familiar with this exact starter, but that seems like a safer option.

my hood is not big enought o accomodate a 40w bulb maximum is 25w cos of its length :)

This confuses me

You have only room for 25W lights, so where does the 40W starter come in?

Why not just buy a 25W starter.

From what I have been told, read etc.

If you connect a 30W bulb to an 18W starter you will only get 18W power running through it

If you connect an 18W bulb to a 30W starter There is 12W of powr that needs somewhere to go.

Thing of the fluorescent tube as being the 'fuse' wire

If you use 18W and put 18W into it no probs
If you use 18W and put 30W into it, the fuse wire disintegrates

Just to add to what Andy said, they're called 40W starters for a reason, and that reason is because they deliver 40W of power. If you can only fit a 25W bulb on your tank, then you should only be looking at 25W starters. If you try putting a 25W bulb into a 40W starter, you'll have 15W left over that will more than likely do something bad (ie. start something on fire).

If you want more wattage but don't have much overhead space, look into other options like power compact fluorescents. Using those I currently have 80W (only using 40W right now while I balance things) running over my little 10g tank with extra space to spare.
