I have been treating 2 dwarf gourmais for ulcers in my quarantine, and also have a krib in there who I suspected had finrot. Krib seems recovered, but one of the gouramis was lying on his side at the bottom of the tank this morning, gasping. I netted him and straight away noticed that in addition to the 2 ulcers he had, which hadn't appeared to have worsened, he also had some large pinkish patches on his body, which looked quite frankly like he was starting to rot away. I was late for work and had to make a decision on the spot - so I euthanized him in ice cold water :( First time I have had to do this and it really upset me. I have taken photos of the fish before disposing of him, but can't upload them until tonight when i get home. Does anyone have any idea what these patched might have been, and do you think the other 2 fish are at risk? I did what I thought was right by putting him out of his misery and removing him because it would be awful to get home to find he had died naturally and that the others were feasting on him... as I don't know exactly what was wrong I decided it best not to risk the others.
Help!

Anybody? Any ideas? I could do with some idea before I leave work because then i can get more meds on my way home if need be... I have been treating with Interpet Anti internal Bacteria, did dose no 2 on Tuesday night....

would love to help but no idea without seeing the patches what it might be
sorry :good:

I'm not the best person with fish illnesses but the pink patches could be haemorrhageing if he/she had a systemic bacterial infection with the ulcers. I've had to euthenise fish a couple of times and it's not a pleasant experience so you have my sympathy.

It sound like your dwarf gourami caught the dreaded dwarf-gourami-iridovirus(DGIV).

It presents symptoms similar to what you described; ulcers, excess mucous, difficulty breathing and swimming. It was better that you put him down instead of leaving him to suffer.

I don't think other fish can catch it but it would be best to treat anyway, to get it out of your system in case you want DGs again.

Sorry for your loss. :rip:

Well here are the pics, on pic 1 you can see the ulcer towards the right at the top.

The second pic is the other side of the fish, the pink is much more pronounced on this side

Bear in mind the colouring had not come out on this gourmai much before this, he was mostly powder blue so the colouring on these patches was not natural and only appeared overnight :(
I have done a 35% water change on the tank and am keeping an eye on the other inhabitants.
