Had A Bit Of An Argument In Pets@home

hi all,i must say that my pets at home store in coventry isnt half as bad as some of yours.when i go there & look at the fish most (but not all) of them seem really healthy.once i noticed a case of ich in a tank & i told one of the people who worked there who imediatly put the tank under quarentine & started treatment while i was still in the shop!so good on them for that!!!i agree the tanks are terribly over stocked which makes them disease prone but unfortunatly thats what happens in a world where high turn over & profit rule over common sense & propper care.the only fish iv ever bought from there was a goldfish for my son.its still going strong in my friends pond & must be 10 years old easily!i buy all my fish and supplies from my lfs Coventry Aquatics.is a husband & wife team & they must of been going for 20+ years now.they really know what there on about & give all the right advice.there tanks are spotless & fish very healthy.there also not afraid to tell you why a tank is quarentined if they do ever have an outbeak of any disease (which happens in the best of shops from time to time).so if your ever in coventry i highly reccomend you have a look!!!!!!!!!! :D x

Die Grinder, I'm due to go to Pets @ Home at some point to pick up my dog food so like normal I'll be checking out the fish of course, normally the tanks arent in the best shape with loads of algae growing on the gravel etc and of course the many dead and diseased fish, however I have seen it just after tanks have been maintained and it has looked ok! I have never asked the staff for fish as the one time I was going to buy and fish all the tank lights were off so I presumed that they werent for sale! I'll get back to you on how they are but it's the one in Leeds (Colton)! If I'm not happy this time they will be getting a letter from me as I'm fed up of seeing dirty tanks especially to say they dont have many! One thing they do have that I do like and think is a good idea is the identity cards of the fish above the tank ok it's not got loads of info on but it says what the fish are and what size they'd grow to which is a good idea shame it doesnt say whether or not they are suitable for community tanks or not!

Hey all.

I have to say, I haven't a clue what my local P@H is like for fish - I go in there for supplies but have never bought pets from them - I feel like there's something a bit dodgy about an animal supermarket - my rabbit came from a breeder and I've been using a specialist tropical fish store. I know someone who bought a rabbit from the Bournemouth branch (this is going back about 5 years now mind) and it died within days - she took it back and they gave her another one - which also died within days. I think you just have to be really careful about checking the specific animals when you go. Even though I won't buy pets there, I know the rabbits and guineas are in pretty good shape at the Bristol (Filton) P@H as I always go and say hello to them and the breeder I talk to has had various conversations with the management there and has noticed very positive changes as a result. Maybe next time I go in I'll take a look at the fish too! Do you think they'd be interested in reading some of the comments from this site? There seems to be a number of threads on this subject - perhaps they don't even know the extent of the problem or how it could potentially affect business - they should be worried if they are being slated in a public forum. Certainly the Filton branch seems to have taken on board comments from people "in the know".

Well this time the tanks looked ok in that there were no dead fish! My friend bought a male VT betta from there too (he was gorgeous so had to rescue him), I was amazed to have the guy check that she had a tropical tank and wasnt putting him in with another betta, which was good! I was concerned at the amount of bubbles that were collecting at the surface of the water in some of the tanks from the filters it wasnt the odd bubble taking ages to pop it was most of them and they were getting thick wonder if it had anything to them blowing out water at full pelt (its how it looked)! It's the first time that I've been in and not actually had anything major to complain about!

I also recently rescued a new betta from my local P@H - his fins were in tatters. The woman serving me did at least ask if I had any angels or barbs.

He's now happily building his bubble nest in his new 2g tank and I think his fins are growing already.

as i have said before pets at home have a new woman incharge of livestock, and she is strict! so things should keep improving. just takes time for her to get thru all the stores :p

I think it is good that they are starting to make changes even if it is slow! We cant expect miracles over night! I just hope that the improvements last and are not just a short term measure!
