Ive only had these guys a couple days past a week, and last night my wife noticed they both were very bright yellow, and i noticed them doing some twitching and dancing, so i was very excited today to see them cleaning off one of the rocks I had placed strategically around the tank. i took some video of them cleaning and getting ready, and as soon as i walked away from the tank, not 5 min later, she had spawned a nice group of eggs. I set up the camera again and I think I captured some more eggs being dropped, but u cant see that detail on the video.

Ok so Im very excited, and plan to raise as many as I can to sell them back to the LFS who told me they would buy them back for instore credit, yeah!!!!!

Since they are young and this is their first time doing this I understand theres a good chance none of the eggs will make it.

if some do make it to free swimming, what is the food I should be feeding them, and will i be able to feed it to them directly in the tank with the other fish around?

Im new to cichlids so any and all advice and thoughts are welcome.

I got some pictures and some video Ill be posting shortly.

The Video!

Something like Tetra Prima crushed into fine dust so that they can eat it. They will be fine for a few days as they will have their yolk sac to keep them going. Also think about adding some crushed algae wafers or pellets as algae is a big part of their diet.

Congratulations by the way, I have recently bought a pair and am hoping for a similar experience to you!!

Keep us informed.

brine shrimp that are freshly hatched and not too big. you cant beat it as a starter food with any fish :good:

when can i start to expect to see some changes in these eggs, and or hatching? Ive read 3-4 days? is that correct with Rainbows?

earlier today the female moved all the eggs to a shallow pit she dug under my hygro plants roots.

now im seeeing egg movement! they are very tiny, so hard to see, but all the eggs look to be squirming around, or maybe even have a tail sticking out? its like they are half hatched or something. but they are so tiny, maybe im just not seeing correctly. very excited!

The fry hatch in about 5 days, and are free swimming by 8-9. The fry are small but will gladly eat brine shrimp. Growth is relatively well paced. The fry grow up to about 1 inch in 2 months.
