and today i have free swimming!!! woo hooo! im so excited, but i can already see the female is alot more anxious, and shes constantly darting around trying to keep the fry from swimming too far, or too high. i set up a breeder net and squirted about 5 fry in there just to increase my odds incase something happens to the main batch. I have a grow out tank i am getting ready as well. ill post the video this evening.

Mine are also free swimming today! :D I have a similar amount to yours... my question is, what the hell do i do with about 150 baby rainbow cichlids?

The amazing thing is though is that i have only had them a week and they have free swimming fry already! :look:

And just to make it worse i also have about 50-80 Honduran Red Points of the same age...

LOL!!! I'm going to need a 8ft grow out tank!

haha thats funny, ive only had mine 2 weeks! yeah I have a 30g grow out tank getting ready, and ive moved about 25-30 to a 10g tank as well. Ive seen their number shrink today alone, the platty fry who are a month old are really trying to eat them (and ive seen them succeed) they fry keep swimming up and then they are pretty much free food. i noticed my harelquins getting curious as well. :(

so these fry seem to have zero concept of danger, i mean, compared to platty fry, these guys are just clueless, swimming all out in the open and stuff, they are getting picked off left and right, and theres not much i can do about it. the female is trying her best, but they are all swimming in different directions. kinda bumming me out.

awww the female sounds determined... but it must be difficult keeping that many fry together lol ... she must be a great wee mum lol :)

sadly, over the course of one day, all the fry ive left in with the mom have all been eaten. I never once saw either mom or dad eating them, so thats great, but the plattys and harelquins got to em. luckily, i have pulled about 25 to a grow out tank, and have another 10 or so in a breeder net in the main tank, we'll see how it goes.

Such a shame mate. At least you have a few saved though. :D

Try and remove the rest of the fry and do a cold water change to try and get them to spawn again :good:
