Been out put some Tropical hardwood in tank.

Instructions

Pre-soaking overnight may avoid discolouration; Aquarium Yellowing can be remove with TAP aqua carbon. I was assured by LFS, wash it and it will be OK to put in tank straight away. I am not so sure.

Went out, everything fine.
Come back, water has a yellow tinge, Redtailed Black shark seems OK, but colouration has changed from brillant black with red tail to no so black with redish tail.

Help

Aquarium yellow, will cause black water (so called because of the dark colouration, most people refer to it as "tea colour"). Its not harmful to your fish in any way, and some fish actually prefer it seeing as their natural enviroment contains black water.

The lose of colour in your fish is more than likely because you've been messing around with the tank (moving things, adding things etc). Just keep an eye on it, he should be fine tomorrow.

Your water however, will get stained more and more unless you've got a Lot of active carbon in your filter. It does no harm, but a lot of people dont like it. Regular water changes, a lot of active carbon and time should get it clear again though.

Also, pre-soaking wood to stop colouration completly is very difficult, most of the time it takes about half a year of hot/boiling water before it stops the tea water completely.
Nothing to worry about I'd say

I was told by my lfs to soak bogwood which I bought for my tank until it sank and then it was ok to put in the tank, good advice as it worked fine for me :D

Erised

Thanks, I really panicked and removed the wood, I am not going to stress my little friend out again by reintroducing the wood tonight.

I have some new carbon filters arriving in the next couple of days as this was a second hand tank and i so have ordered some more.

I dont want anything bad to happen to the little chap as I have got very attached to her in the last 2 days.

It's funny but I am attached to my little buddies as well, I have even given some of them names which I think matches their personality

This is what happens when you don't soak your driftwood. Try boiling it as well, that usually gets the tannins [the stuff making your water yellow] out of the wood.

It's completely harmless, it just isn't sparkling crystal clear.

I just added a 4 foot peace of drift wood to my tank tonight, so far no problems. Although the wood is still floating, but ive got it held down with a couple of rocks. It looks great, and my fish seem to love it.

Ok thanks,

I was really panicking before replies turned up.

In my haste I removed said wood and did a 10% water change. My little mate is swimming around alot, hope i havent upset her. soaked wood in boiling water, changing every 10 mins (excessive probably). Alot of yellow coming out, will take advice and continue this for next couple of days while not at work. this is all new to me but i want to do it right. I have already got attched to my little RTB shark....torpedo (torpy). dont want to loose her !!!!!!
