hi just wondering if anybody has any information on this species, gymnogeophagus gymnogenys. i can't find a right lot. they are meant to be really hard to get hold of, probably why i can't find a single one for sale on the net. got offered 6 for £80 and they are only 1" long inc. tails! looked up pictures and they look stunning and unlike most geo's max out at 15 cm.
basically wondering if anyone knows of any for sale, just so i can compare the price to see if its worth the £80 for the 6.
any information at all will be great!

cheers, Dave

Main issues with Gymnos are the cooling period that they need. They have adapted to use the cooling period in nature to help with metabolism. They really do need this cooling period not just for breeding but to survive long term, I saw some in an LFS and got talking to the owner and he was telling me he had some that were fantastic fish for 18 months then all dropped dead over the course of 2 weeks and he hadnt cooled them just left them in tropical temps and I think that is what ultimately happens if they dont get cooling time.

But if you can do the cooling for them for about 3 months of the year they are a fantastic fish and 6 for £80 is a decent price they usually go for between £8-12 each. Gorgeous fish that would be fantastic in the hobby if it wasnt for the cooling issues.

Also depending on species they need different temperatures in the cooling time. I forget which country they are wild from but I remember that the northern species need the cooler temps where as the southern ones dont need to go quite so low.

do you know of anywhere that is selling them at the moment? the guy who bred these payed £100 for two fish, they are meant to be the hardest gymno's to get hold of. well if i decided to go for it i'd get them their own tank and wait for a pair to form, i would just speak to the guy who bred them about there maintenance as he obviously knows how to keep them happy!
really it was just the price i wanted to confirm, i can't find any anywhere, jeff rapps has some gymno's up on his tangled up in cichlids site but he doesn't have the gymnogenys, the ones he has range from $15-$20 so £10-£15 but if he can't get the gymnogenys in america then they must be difficult to source, really need to find some more of this exact species to compare, something tells me its going to be harder than i thought! ha

The place I saw them was at Ferrybridge Aquatics and they were the G.Meridionalis and I think they were £12 each. I would say the group is worth it, how old are his pair?

Trimar has some Gymno's but they are not 100% accurate on there lists so be cautious.

ie: selling Efaciatus as Severus, Midas as Red Devils etc.

well the guy baught the pair for £100 and i think they were a few inch's, from what was said they would be full grown now at 6" these ones for sale are only about 1" and theres 6. i still can't find gymnogeophagus gymnogenys anywhere, you can't compare the price of different fish really as they will vary and if the gymnogenys are a lot rarer than the others you do see for sale then it would make the deal worth it even more if you get what i meen.
its like saying an asian arowana is worth as much as a silver arowana because they are both arowanas.

i had a look around the net after you mentioned them, theres not much info about and none for sale, i see so many common fihs in the shop for like £8 each i think its a bargain. at the end of the day tho a fish is only worth wot the buyer wants to pay, it sounds like you really want them so id defo go for it.

Get them get them!!! If i lived closer, i'd see if i could snap them up! Gorgeous fish!

well im busy all weekend, actually on my mates stag do tomorrow night so god knows what state i will end up in, will see if he can hold them until next week! still got to find somewhere to put them!

Awwww they are only itty bitty ;) Im sure you can squeeze them in somewhere! Especially for such a good price!! Even if you dont keep them all (like if you are looking for a pair), people from most cichlid associations would snap them up, i believe someone from East Anglia Cichlid Group has got some now and is loving them.
