Hi, my first question is how to sex Guppys.

I have two yellow leopard guppys, one has a black spot on the body the other doesn't. Is the one with the spot female?

Anyway on to my original question, the guppy without the spot seems to have had it's tail nipped.

I have 2 x blue 3 spot gouramis,
2 x glowlight tetras,
1 peppered cory and 1 common plec (soon to be rehomed on Saturday)

Who might have nipped the tail and will it grow back?

Sexing guppies is easy, as it is with any of the common livebearers, Laura. You use the shape of their anal fin, the one next to where they eliminate waste, to sex them. The fin on a male is shaped long and thin and is used as his sex organ. This is a picture of a male of another species of livebearer. The long thin anal fin is called a gonopodium.

This is a picture of a female of the same species with the typical fan shaped or triangular shaped anal fin.

These fish are called golden teddies but are sexed the same way as guppies.

It could very well have been the other guppy (if it is male).
It could have also been the glowlights, being the a nippy tetra, but I also wouldn't discount the gouramis.

welcome to the forums
in the pictures oldman posted the male had a penis as the female did not (just thought i'd explain that a little further)
also the female's anal fins (on the stomach) are going to be rounded and males a little more pointed.
as for the fin nipping this is normalish with livebearers (especially mollies) and i've found the best thing to make this fin grow back is freshwater aquarium salt :good: whenever i do this it tends to make the fin noticeably grow back within a couple days

Myxazin and Pimafix is a super combined meds for the healing of fins rapidly.

Also melafix is good to treat with myxaizin

I've just checked them and they are both male.
I would like some more when my bigger tank is cycled, what sort of male/female ratio would be best?

The best ratio is 1 male to every 3 females, but 1 male for every 2 females is fine.
