Hi
We have an adorable little Sunset Platy and love him to bits  He was in a big 130 litre tank with 3 other Plattys and other various fish but one of the other Plattys kept going up under his Anal Fin annoying him :-(

He wasnt being nipped but i think he was getting stressed out by it because his top fin was going down and he was clamping his rear fin shut :(

Anyhoo we also have a little 35 litre tank with a few small Corys,Guppys and Minnows in so we transfared him to that ;)
But then two Male Guppys started doing the same to him :(
it looks almost like they are going up to suck his anal fin

The local aquirium shop said he could be a she and has fry onboard
They suggested putting him in a breeding tank net for a little while incase he or she was about to drop?
We did this but in the end had to let him out based on the fact im 100% sure hes HE and Our female guppy is Definately about to drop and need the room so to speak

This poor little Sunset Platy seems to be getting this trouble in either tank, why?

What are they after?
I know it sounds daft but my partner wonders if the fist could be intersexed fish?
They seem to be acting around him like they would a female fish but hes clearly not

My partner thinks his Anal fin looks less developed compared to our other three male plattys but he definately doesnt have the right characteristics for a Female Platy

Any ideas as we are at our witz end and we dont want him to have a life where hes constantly harrased by the other fish :(

Please Help :thanks:

Jodie :)

To be absolutely sure if it is male or female, your live bearers are the easiest to tell, if you merely look at the shape of the anal fin, the male has what is called a gonopodium, which is a straight peg like fin and the females' anal fin would be rounded as with any other fish's anal fin...

I think your main problem is an imbalance between the number of males and females in both your guppies and with your platies.... Most people prefer 3 females to every male, but I normally get 5 females for my males....

As Ludwig said, the anal fin shape is the key to sexing a platy. These are pictures of a pair of Heterandria but the anal fin shapes are the same as in a platy for identification purposes.

The pictures are a bit grainy because these are very small fish. The male is only 2 cm long as an adult in real life.
