Agreed, live plants use nitrates as food and reduce the levels naturally. Water changes will keep it about the level of the source, and the best thing to do if you can't bring the levels lower than the source, is to adapt youyr fish to the new tank. Byee this I mean, letting them sit with their bags in the tank for 10 minutes, then open the bag up, and pour a small cup of water in, let it sit again for 10 minutes and do it once more. This will gradually adjust them to a higher level of nitrates rather than being dumped right in. And once they adjust, nitrates will be less of an issue as long as they are 80 ppms or below. Fish can adapt to high nitrates, but they cant go from one level to the other right away.
