Aww sorry to hear you lost your fry,for the future,you don't really need to feed them for the first 24 hours,they will live off their egg sac...feeding them before this will just pollute the water has the fry won't eat it...

Ive had better experience leaving them in the tank than breeding tanks, the babys seem to explore and find their way back to the mother which ends badly
I've gone to all males now until I can afford to turn my tank into a live planted tank... allowing places of refuge.
Being a community tank I don't think fry will ever really stand a chance in there anyway with the likes of a Black Ghost Knife sniffing around the aquarium floor!
In a typical community setting, I must agree with you. The fry stand a chance in a single species tank if there is decent cover but not if you have more predatory fish in the mix, which many of us do.
