Hi,
I have loads of guppy fry in small breeding tanks in my main 180litre tank. I want to buy a small plastic tank to keep them in untill they are big enougth to go in the main one. Do i need to buy a heater for this tank and if i do will it melt the plastic or is it ok to put a heater in a plastic tank??

Thankss for your help!!

Hi & welcome :)

Yes you do need a heater and a cheap sponge filter run by an airpump will surfice until they're older.

You can get acrylic/plastic tanks suitable, has long has the heater isn't touching the plastic you should be ok.

All my guppy/platy fry are in a 90 litre makeshift plastic storage box, complete with heater/filter etc,and its been fine :)

Perfect, thank you! I have loads of platties too but none of them have bred yet, had them for ages!! Any tips?

What sexes are they? and what other fish have you got? :)

Its possibly they could've dropped without you realising, platy fry do tend to hide out near the bottom and are smaller than guppy fry,or they could've been eaten by your fish.

Welcome to the forum Sophieex. You are in good hands with Harlequins. Chances are that if your fish are old enough, they have been breeding. The hard part is sometimes seeing any fry in a community tank.

I have 4 males and 4 females all of different colours (i do have 2 pairs though so thought they would have bred). Maybe i am just missing them but it doesnt seem they get big like my guppy does. One of my guppies has 30+ fry every 3 weeks whereas none of my other female guppies do and it doesnt appear that my platies do either. They are in a tank with a variety of different tetras a clown loach and a very large but friendly eel! I know i shouldnt have the eel with them but he lives in the filter and only comes out to feed and doesnt bother them at all (i had the eel first and he was tiny when i got him but he hasnt stopped growing!)

With livebearers like guppies & platies they are best in ratios of 2/3 females to 1 male, mainly because the males pester the females.Hence more females you would see more fry...

Fry will get eaten straight away, especially with the males, they follow and chase the females when they're due to drop eating fry has they pop out.
And the other fish will eat fry if the fry aren't quick enough to hide.

intresting wide variaty of fish Sophieex, how many tanks do you have ,and you don't sound new to the fish keeping world are you?
