I have about 50 guppy fry in a 30g tank. Fry from one mom seem to be swimming odd, and there tails are compacted into a v shape. They, babies from her second batch dont have this, and babies from 2 other moms batches dont have this either. Any idea's of whats wrong?

Maybe possibly her first birth, maybe a birth defect? I have seen that happen before with fish who have had their first batches!

It is WORSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It almost looks like fin and tail rot, but their some f the babies tails are yellow and decayed!!!!!!!!!!! I put salt in to prevent fin and tail rot but obviously somthing is wrong. HElp, i dont want to lose all my babies!

How often do you do the water changes?
Is is just the babies or could their tails be getting bitten?

Are you sure they are not stressed and the tails are clamped???

I do water changes once every 2 weeks, and i use amquel plus to keep everything in check. It is just the babies. At first they were clamped, but now they are decaying and the affected fish are just sitting at the top of the tank, it is almost like they are waiting for death.

In a fry tank with that many fish (especially guppy fry) you should be doing a 25% water change twice a week at most, (what i do for my 10g fry tank). If your fish appear to be "decaying", they have probably contracted either fin rot or some sort of fungus. I would do 2 25% water changes over the period of 24 hours. The fish that are not ill yet should be alright after this, but the ones that have a fungus or fin rot may be doomed. If they are young fry, they will most likely not survive any kind of med treatments.

How big is your tank? A test kit sure would come in handy at this point in time, eh?

The tank is 30g and the fry arent that big at all. Now i think there is less than 30 left. I will try to some water changes done today. My tank cant be outta wack beasue i just put in a tablspoon of amquel plus in their and i also had some convicts in there about 2 weeks ago and they were fine, not one thing wrong.

Sad situation - I hope they get better. (I've had some pretty bent fry straighten up eventually, but haven't had the finrot thing.) Good luck.

I called the lfs and talked to my freind( head of the fish dept.) and he asked were i got the mom. I told him one of my teachers bought some guppies along time ago adn let them be. He said that most of the sick fish were from this guppy, an di said yes. He said that what probably happend is that the mom has inbred so many times that her babies had a very weak genes and that left them subceptable to diseases. So he told me to put all the sick fish in a slat bath, and i did( they were so sick it killed them all within a half a minute). Then i did a larg water change, and filled it back up. The only problem is i dont have a heater( it died a little over a week ago), so the fish are usually in 71 degree water, so they are a little more subcetable to diseases. So when i refilled the tank, i put warm water in instead of cold to warm the tank up for the moment. I found lots of dead fish bodies stuck in between the rocks, so thier genes must be very week.
