I have 5 male fancy guppies in my 10g tank, two of which I added about a week and a half ago. Since then, they've been doing some sort of a staring contest with each other, facing off and swimming in sync. This being my first fish tank, I'm not sure if this is normal. I'm starting to wonder if it's some way of establishing dominance, or is it some sort of mating ritual? The LFS had them listed as all male, but you can't always trust your LFS.
The end part of their caudal pentacle is dark up to their bellies, so I can't see a gravid spot. I THINK they're all male, but thought I would check just to be safe.

There is a bit of nipping going on, but they do have plenty of places to retreat to if they choose (which they usually don't).
Most of the nipping I've witnessed though seems to be more along the undersides, not on the face, which is part of what's got me so curious.

sounds like they're trying to mate, will do it with anything, probably sick of not having females around ;) I wouldn't worry unless they are getting seriously stressed out. Males usually have a gonopodium (the anal fin looks like a tube) while in females the anal fin is fan-shaped, males also have longer and more colorful fins/tails.

I haven't noticed any fan-shaped anal fins, so they must all be male. Cheeky little buggers.
Thanks for the reply, there's so much to learn about fish keeping!
