i have had no illness before in this tank.

Ok, about 2-3 days ago i bought 5 guppys and 2 kribensis' . the day after i got them back one of the guppys died, he ahd been badly fin nipped and half his tail was missing (he came like that) and now another one has died and another one looks sick, he is floating at the surface gasping for oxygen barely swimming (none of my other fish are gasping for oxygen and my tnak is well aerated) i am worried he will die soon aswell. please help me . is there anything i can do ?

Can you post water stats please in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Your tanks slightly overstocked.

How low did you climatise the new fish for.

about 30 mins, and i dont know how to use my test kit :p

Always test bag water in ph and temp.
This way you know how long to climatise the new fish for.

Do you have your water stats yet.

i have good aeration and filtration, and whats worrying is my other fish are gettin effected, on one my platys appears to have some sort of parasite itchy thing making him flail around scratching on things. one of my shrimp has died, afew of the tetras appear to have some sort of fin rot, but all the others are fine, do you think its a good idea to put them in my small tank till its sorted out? it would be very cramped :p what do you think ? is there anything i can do ?

Do you have ammonia reading?
What rest kit are you using.

Any excess mucas on the fish body or gills.
Do the gills look pale with excess slime, or red and inflamed.
Any tiny white, yellow spots on the fish.
Any grey or blueish film on the fish.
What does it look like when your fish go to the toilet.

No i didn't notice any of those things except they were pale and there fins seemed to rot away and go wiry, i got my water tested at the shop i bought the guppies from and the results were considerably different, i will test it again. the guy there thought that my PH was way too acidic and thats why the guppies died and their fins corroded but the kribs that i got at exactly the same time were fine, there is one guppy left now all on his own :(

just did the test again and the results are exactly the same as last time and different to the test in the fish shop, is the PH of 6.8 alright ? or does it need to be higher ?

You can probably trust your test results. First problem is kribensis are very aggressive and dont belong in your mix. Second in your picture you posted the guppy does show signs of disease. UNfortunately guppies are prone to a virus and are very hard to keep..If you want guppies in the future try a private breeder not an imported guppy.

thankyou, i realize that guppys are prone to everything, are wild guppies any different ? Kribs are community fish and get along with most other fish, just because they are cichlids doesn't mean they have to be an antisocial breed. the guy in the shop siad that the resualts for the PH was like 4 point something but isnt that impossible? he even checked it with an electronic reader, i thinks ive been had! 4/5 guppies have died now but the last seems fine, but 1 of my tetras died and so did one of my platys. the platy appeared to have some sort of itch as he was flicking all over the place and he was dead when i woke up this morning. im gonna trya different Test kit, its one for my pool but it has a ph tester see if it is different :p

I doubt you will be able to find wild guppies. A pH of 6.8 is perfect for your community tank. If you were to go with only livebearers then you might want a higher Ph. But livebearers can tolerate 6.8. If your pH was 4. something all of your biological filter bed would die off and your ammonia would skyrocket and your fish would die. you would b e prudent to medicate your tank though as you have fish scratching on things. Quick cure by aquarium products is very good.

The guppies appear to be suffering from some sort of external bacterial thing. I am guessing that what you perceived as "nips" was actually their fins rotting away. I would do a big water change now and then just keep your water very clean. Are you in the US or the UK?

Thanks for your help, i have bought some disease treatment medicine today and i ahve applied the right dosage like it siad on the packet :D hopefully i will lose no more, but i feel sorry for the last guppy that is the only one of its kind in my aquarium :( and i perticularly want to buy any more guppies after this nightmare, plus my tank is pretty crowded anyway
