Hey guys, i would like to know how do you know if a guppy is male or female? Do they breed a lot? How many can i fit into a 10 gallon?

If you look at the anal fin of the guppy, a female will have a normal 'fan' shaped fin, whereas a male will have rod like structure called a gonopodium that he uses to mate with.

They do indeed breed a lot. A female can have 40 or 50 babies every 30 days, and she can store sperm for up to six months, so that's potentially another 300 or so fry, even with no male being present!

In a 10 gallon, you could fit around a dozen guppies; I strongly advise you to get males only to prevent any population explosions.

If you want fry, then 6 or 7 females and 3 males; the males are sex mad; you need to have more females than males, or the poor girls get worn out trying to get a bit of piece and quiet!
