Well, I finally have fish again. I have never had guppies and my husband liked them, so we brought home 3. Plus 3 platies and a Bolivian ram pair. So the fish have only been in the tank for 16 hours so I know they need more time to settle in.

My problem is that the guppies have been around the surface the whole time. The male does go about exploring a little more, but the two females stay near the top.

I slowly lowered the temp to 76 degrees from 78 and shifted the spray bar to agitate the surface more. I also did a water change just in case. The water is testing fine.

I admit, I have quite a bit of paranoia here, and since I have never had guppies I was hoping to find out if this behavior is normal. They don't seem to be gasping, and the platies and rams are not at the surface. The rams are still quite dark so I know they need more time to settle in. All of the fish are still a little skittish. I will know all is well when the platies start going around pecking everything.

Thanks for you thoughts!

Hi guppies tend to stay at the top level of the tank. Mines do it anyway lol they will only go down to the bottom if chasing some falling food or if the males chasing the females but other than that they stay at the top.

My 6 guppies spend the majority of their time at the top of the tank - only venturing elsewhere to look for food or sometimes to rest :)

Thanks everyone! My male Tuxedo likes to explore all over today, so I felt calmer. Your responses made me feel a lot better. Crazy little things :)

Isn't that too hot for Guppies to live comfortably with? They're sub-tropical Fish, they need to be kept cooler?

I keep my guppies at the same temperature. Mine don't hang out at the top quarter of the water but do tend to be at the top half of the tank but with frequent bobs farther down, especially younger ones.

The male was exploring more often around the tank. I got a good look at the two females and both had some issues with their fins. I ran them back to the fish store as I only had them for 1 day, and my qt tank is still having a nitrite spike {middle of cycling}

Hi please can you inform what is the best ratio for male and female guppies.

1 male to many females :lol: I had 1 male and 2 females, and generally follow that rule with other livebearers like platy's as well. You will get fry though and should know that going in :)

I have 1 male platy and 3 females.

I like to have 1 male to 4-6 females if kept together. I have recently separated the sexes.
