What would be better for guppies and mollies, gravel or sand???
The tank currently has light coloured gravel with a mix of coloured rocks. I`m thinking of changing this to sand but not sure if both these fish type will like it.
Any comments? If sand is ok to use, what would be a good sand to get? If sand is no good I`ll just change the gravel to a dark coloured one.

Cheers, Min.

Anyone?
I would like to get sand tommorrow if these 2 kinds of fish will like it. If I don`t get any replies by morning I think I`ll just get darker coloured gravel. I`m gonna search a little bit more on this then i`m off to bed.

Thanks, Min.

I bought some darker gravel yesterday. I`m just waiting for my filter media to arrive before I do a complete setup change.
Plus I have just finished making a tank cabinet and gotta choose a colour to paint it. Hopefully all will be done by this weekend. If not I`ll have to wait till mid week next week.

I have used both sand and gravel with mollies and guppies. I don't think they really care which you use, so I go with the needs of other fish in the tank like cories or "earth eaters" that must have a fine substrate. If I have nothing requiring sand, I use gravel since it is easier to care for.

Seems like I chose the right substrate for my sons tank. I have plants that have just arrived today, they are sealed in plastic bags with water. How long can they last like this? I want to plant them in about 2 days from now. If its no good to wait this long will it be ok to put the plants into a bucket of tank water for 2 days?
I probably should ask this question in the plants section.

I think with molly's gravel is best so long as it isn't too big to choke on as they regularly get a mouth full of gravel to suck the organisms off it before spitting it out.

get guppies.
Then if the worse comes to the worse ( you hate them )
Then you can bread and sell

guppies bread like hell  so if you like fish get guppies it saves you buy and buy more.
if you want a different range of fish do not get guppies cus they bread and fill your tank then you can't get different fish.

I have a big tank and a fry tank. I put the fish i wanted in there and with guppies then when the female gets big i put her in the fry tank she gives birth i take her out but her in the big tank then wait for the fry to get big then put the fry / big guppies into the big tank. then when i don't want no more guppies when the female gets big i don't get her out and the fry gets eaten.

The plants in sealed bags will easily last a week if they get some decent light. Why not set them next to a North facing window? It will get as much light as most aquarium lighting will ever give that way.

The plants stayed in the bag for 1 day then where planted. I broke off 2 peices of wood from my bogwood and tied java ferns to them. I place the moss on the bigger peice of wood and tied with cotton. I planted the ends of the hornwort direct into the gravel (I hope this is ok). 1 peice came out and started floating so I just wrapped that 1 around the top of my filter intake tube (for fry purposes). All the fish seem to like the real plants better than the fake. I will have to get some more but different low tech plants as the tank looks bare.

Low tech easy care for fry is either najas grass or java moss. Both form nice dense thickets where fry can hide and feel safe.
