I had 5 GSPs and 2 Figure 8 puffers in a 20Gallon Brackish tank. Within 3 days I've lost 1 of the Figure 8s, and 2 of the GSPs the tank has been up and running for about 2 months and has been properly cycled, cleaned etc. The salinity is at 1.018 PH 7.6 0 Nitrites and Ammonia. I'm not sure what could be the problem, they were completely fine one day then dead the next. I'm completely befuddled as to what would make them drop dead like that.

First of all you can't have 7 puffers in a 20 gallon. Gsps are very aggressive and so are figure eights. You should have either 1 figure eight or one green spot. As for the deaths, I'm not exactly sure. But, you should take back all but one puffer.

Hope his helps! :good:

There are only 5 in there now 4 GSPs and 1 Figure 8. They haven't been aggressive at all with each other, no fin nipping or anything, I always pick the least aggressive ones from my petstore.

Their potential adult size would leave you at being able to keep one, possibly two long term in a twenty gallon. Your salinity is almost full strength sea water. Slowly bring it down to 1.005 to 1.012 for a more brackish salinity, although fluctuations would be natural.

Figure Eights are low end brackish, while GSPs are high end to Maine. As already stated, you should take all of them back but one, or get a larger tank and separate them. GSPs need 30 gallons each, and Fig8s need about 20 each. :)

F8's will require about 15(US)G for the 1st fish and 10(US)G after so with 2 you would be slightly overstocked. GSP's will require about 30(US)G per fish so with 1 you are overstocked.

GSP's and F8's require different conditions. F8's will do best between SG1.003 and SG1.005 @ 25DegC. GSP's require higher salinities; SG1.012+ @25DegC with many keeping theirs in marine conditions.

Even if your tank was cycled the amount of waste produced by all of them fish would make the water quality so poor that the fish would be killed by pollution from their own waste. Check your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels to be sure of your water quality and unfortunately I have to advise you to re-home most of your fish.

Carry out plenty of daily water changes to keep the waste levels down.

I can't believe it posted the same thing like 3 times. Even if they aren't nipping now they will. Gsps get a good 6 inches. 1 figure eight would be perfect in your 20 gallon, providing you lower the sg down to 1.012

Double post much?
Ha!

providing you lower the sg down to 1.012

Isn't that a bit high for F8s? I thought they liked more around, 1.002-1.004?

Sorry, it as late at night. I was typing for green spots. Figure eights are 1.004. And I hate double posts!

I think even F8's need a bigger tank than 15g. A 30g would be a better option. They are a very active fish that love to surf the current. Keeping them in a small tank will just make them miserable. Also the correct salinity is vital. If your salinity level is that high then there is no wonder they are dying really.
