Grrr

CTlovesKS i see your in Dorset

What shop was it u went to and If I've been their I'll give an honest response about the shop.

Most of the time they are okay with th fish it was only these and some goldfish i have had problems with (Dont worry goldfish was in different tank) it was southern aqauatics and pets.

Oh..... in creekmoor?

Worst place in Dorset in my ranking's.

In-laws got some fish their 2 weeks and and have lost over half of all their fish now due to a gill problem and they cant do a thing either.

All i can say is find somewhere else and spend you money with a place willing to honestly help you.

Atlantis in Charminster is good
And modaz here has a shop nr pokesdown in boscome.
Wven pets at home is better then SA....... which is saying something.

I think to be fair to the lfs if there is any sign of ammonia with fish deaths then they can argue that is why the fish have died, and they can not be held responsible. Now add to that a rise in Ph (from ammonia spike maybe) and the SMALLEST traces of ammonia become deadly to the fish.

Saying that he probably should not have sold you 6 platies in one go (no filter could adjust quickly enough unless massive!) so you could hit him from that angle I suppose!

Did he tell you the actual levels?

no didnt tell me actually levels all he said, was Ph was just above what it should be so nothing to do with that and amonia wasnt bad but wasnt good either.

amonia wasnt bad but wasnt good either.

There is no middle ground with ammonia, It is either 0 or it is bad,
and with the tank only 1 month old and already containing 3 messy catfish its not hard to see the problem ??

what size is the tank and how well stocked is it?
Also what was the ammonia reading?

tbh for 6 platys to cause an ammonia spike, there must have already been an underlying problem IMO, i.e, tank is overstocked or filter is too small etc..
And I must say if/when customers come into my workplace and they have ammonia present in their tanks then I wouldn't be refunding or replacing fish.
Gotta agree with Davo here.

IMO the shop has reason to be suspect.

I dont know if i have missed this but how big is the tank?

have you done a cycle?

2.5 ft in length (yes i do know there is a chance to be og rehoming my catfish and plecos)

I cycled it for a months. I used some old filter pads and used some of my matured tank down stairs as well as putting food in to build up bacteria

You say i can see the problem... 4 catfish and a newish tank... the tank was far from new as as sated above used mature water food and fliter pads etc... If my water was that bad why didnt it read this Ph and Amonia when I done a water test at same shop before I brought fish. this problem only happened after the fish got put in... !!!!

And as someone stated SA in creekmore isnt the best place to buy from and they are utterly Crap !!!

Trouble is CT you got ammonia in your tank and it is this that killed your fish - especially considering the fact that your ph increased (ammonia effects are 10x for every 1 ph increase I think) and the fish will have been stressed from the move to.

As mentioned above in this hobby you cannot afford to have any ammonia in your tank it can kill fish very quickly.

I cant go to my 2 lfs, i travel 8 miles further for a decent one!
My first lfs sold me a tank 'suitable for 3 goldfish' that was only 20l, naively i believed them and followed their advise of leaving the tank a week then adding fish. Needless to say the fish were not happy!

I then visited my 2nd lfs and asked about the health of the fish, they sold me a highly expensive air pump and ugf, which turns out i dont really need! They didnt mention anything about cycling with fish

I have now found this fabulous site and my goldfish are now outside in my pond! My new 25 gallon tank is being cycled ready for hopefully some guppies! I am so excited about my first well informed set up! Just shows that some lfs are full of BS!

Haha, ive ranted enough
