The Wet Spot contributed to our annual Aquarist Society of Central Maryland gala. To return the favor the Aquarist Society of Central Maryland is placing a group fish order this week. The Society is footing the shipping charge. I ordered 18 wc Nannostomus marginatus. I love these fish.

The above is another reason why I keep urging folks to find and join their local fish club if one is available.
I couldn't agree more. I know that clubs used to get hard to find fish from Canadian importers/distributors too. Working together is how to get things done, but first, you need a way to find the people who like what you do.

Back at the turn of the century when fishrooms weren't so rare, my friend Phil had 40 tanks and was breeding Malawi Cichlids. His kids brought a friend over, and one of the kids said "My Dad has more tanks than you do, with some of those fish." Phil found out where he lived (across the road, diagonally) and went over to introduce himself to Yves, another friend of mine who had 50 tanks of Tanganyikans, killies and Mbuna. They'd lived across from each other in a faceless suburb for 3 years, each convinced they had no one to share their hobby with.

After they joined the fish club, they met 3 other fishroom people within ten minutes of them, and they organized buys together.

When I moved to this sleepy little industrial port and spoke to a contractor about transforming half the outbuilding/garage into a fishroom, I figured the guys would think I was nuts. They offered constructive modifications to my plan, based on the fact they'd already built several local large scale fish spaces. It's taken four years, but I've found one of the guys they worked for, a breeder of the corydoras group with great expertise and knowledge. The other ones are still out there somewhere... but the one I met showed up in the club I helped start.

Fyi - they also have a. sp ladisalo - these are a nijjensi complex fish (orange tail outline, ~pair forming) but also a bit more docile than some of the other species in that complex. They do require acidic water that is moderatly soft but not quite as critical as some of the other species - something like tds 20 or maybe 40 would work. They are also on the larger size - bit larger than nijjensi - large male can be 3+ inches and female 2+ inches but there is a wide variance.

This is a relatively new species discovered 3 or 4 years ago.

That store... I could have to sell my car if I could order from them. The African rainforest fish they have ... I try to avoid looking at their site.

I cannot resist and eagerly look forward to the Friday updates when their already enormous and tantalizing inventory can increase by 75-100 new offerings.

@gwand : I also look forward to seeing exactly which population you receive. The website states 'Peru.' If so--and Wetspot's information is only as reliable as the supplier who provides it--you may wind up with an especially colorful morph. (The photo is their default photo for the species. Yours will likely be more colorful.) I have found that of those Nannostomus that have populations across many countries, the Peruvian form is often the most colorful. Certainly true of N. marginatus and N. trifasciatus which have populations throughout the Amazonian basin and Guiana Shield. Interestingly, N. rubrocaudatus and N. mortenthaleri, as well as the new undescribed 'red things' that are clearly related to them, are only found in Peru thus far and are arguably the most brilliantly colored of all Nannostomus. There's something about Peru and Nannostomus.

I know what you mean. It has become a Friday night ritual, like lighting candles, to visit the Wet Spot website.

Fyi: wetspot now has some 'lipstick' available - here are pictures - just be aware like most trifs they are vicious little monsters:

The pictures are mine:

I only like lipstick on females 😉

Up until the moment that the powers that be blow up Nannostomus and give a name to every Nannostomus population of every species, and specifically make every one of the numerous Nannostomus trifasciatus variants a new species, this will remain N. cf. trifasciatus whether the exporters label it 'lipstick,' 'rouge' or 'red nail polish.'

@gwand : love your new avatar! You are now a member in good standing of NA (Nannostomus Anonymous).

Well that is true but knowing which population you will receive is a bonus of having a nick name on top of the cf trif as long as everyone uses the same nick name for the same population which of course doesn't happen which makes a mess when trying to determine what you buy.

Still these lipsticks variety per my pictures are actually pretty darn nice though they are 'assholes' to everyone else ;)

It still amazes me how fish species can look so alike externally but at the cellular level have unique DNA sequences.
